One of the biggest issues facing individuals with poor mental health is the stigma
surrounding it. Many people have negative preconceptions about what mental
health conditions are, and this paves the way for discriminatory behaviour.

There are many subtle prejudices that lead to
people with mental health conditions being side-
lined, minimised or harassed.
Stigma dictates many daily experiences for these
individuals. They may be dismissed when they try to
seek medical care, pushed out of their workplaces
and deliberately excluded from wider communities.
Some even internalise that stigma, which impacts their
self-esteem and their desire to improve their circum-
stances.

It’s often difficult for individuals with
poor mental health to feel as though
they are a part of the community when
their situations are being stigmatised.
However, human beings require
community support for their wellbeing
because those close social connections
help to combat feelings of loneliness,
stress and hopelessness.
The key for those with poor mental
health and wellbeing is to embrace
community in a bid to receive support.
Friends, family members and social
peers can all help, and this is one of
the best ways to challenge stigma and
correct false notions.
