disaster management

Slide Content

INCLUSIVE DATES:

OBJECTIVES CONTENT STANDARDS: The learners demonstrate understanding of the: Concept of disaster Concept of disaster risk Nature of disasters Effects of disasters B. PERFORMANCE STANDARDS: The learners are able to relate the concept of disaster with daily life

OBJECTIVES C. SPECIFIC LEARNING OBJECTIVES At the end of the meeting, the learners should be able to:   Cognitive: explain the meaning of disaster, risk and disaster risk;   Psychomotor:  discuss the different elements of disaster risk; and   Affective: realize the importance of the study of disaster risk. D: TARGET VALUE/S (from the Institutional Values Grid): Initiative and cooperation

Basic Concept of Disaster and Disaster Risk Textbook Reference Disaster Preparedness 101 by Bongalonta, Ranold P. et al. pp.3-9   B. Other Reference/s Disaster Readiness and Risk Reduction by Rimando, Rolly. E. pp. 3-13 Oliva, M. D. G, (2016). Disaster Readiness and Risk Reduction . Makati City, Philippines Diwa Learning Systems Inc. II. CONTENT/TOPIC: III. LEARNING RESOURCES:

1 . What do you think of the school’s yearly earthquake and fire drills? 2. Do you find these drills important? Why? 3. What are the good things about the school’s drills? What do you suggest (if there is any) to the school improve them?

GUESS THE WORD. Identify the jumbled letters based from the given description. 1. DSAISTER A sudden calamitous event, bringing great damage, loss, destruction, and devastation 2. GRNI FO IEFR A path along the Pacific Ocean characterized by active volcanoes and frequent earthquakes 3. TALAYMIC An event causing great and often sudden damage or distress 4. CFCPIAI NEAOC Largest and deepest of Earth's oceanic divisions 5. LTARUNA DSAISTER A natural event such as a flood, earthquake, or hurricane that causes great damage or loss of life 6. NMA EDMA DSAISTER Caused by man are those in which major direct causes are identifiable intentional or non-intentional human actions

What is disaster? A sudden calamitous event bringing great damage, loss or destruction (Merriam-Webster) Per definition from Philippine Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Act of 2010 (RA 10121) It is a serious disruption of the functioning of a community or a society involving widespread human, material, economic or environmental losses and impacts, which exceeds the ability of the affected community or society to cope using its own resources. Its impacts may include loss of life, injury, disease and other negative effects on human, physical, mental and social well-being, together with damage to property, destruction of assets, loss of services, Social and economic disruption and environmental degradation. What is Risk? exposure to the chance of injury or loss; a hazard or dangerous chance to expose to the chance of injury or loss; hazard Source: https://www.dictionary.com/browse/risk What is Disaster Risk? According to UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction: The definition of disaster risk reflects the concept of hazardous events and disasters as the outcome of continuously present conditions of risk. It comprises different types of potential losses which are often difficult to quantify It may be specific to a location or condition of a community. It d etermines the tendency of a community to face disasters.

Examples of Disaster Risk: poor design and construction of buildings lack of public information and awareness limited official recognition of risks and preparedness measures disregard for wise environmental management (waste management, water and air quality, climate change caused by global warming) Can you cite specific examples for each disaster risk given above?

Some specific examples of disaster risks? Poorly constructed buildings in earthquake prone areas and soft soil areas Infrastructures made of flammable materials Contractors using low standard raw materials Residing in low lying areas and near to potential risky areas such as volcanoes and coasts. Residing near quarrying and mining sites Residing near factories (prone to fire and chemical exposure) Poor waste management system especially in urban areas Photo sources: abscbnnews.com; Remate online

ELEMENTS OF DISASTER RISK : Risk Acceptance: an informed decision to accept the possible consequences and likelihood of a particular risk. EXAMPLES : (1) Communities living in Navotas area are aware and expect of the flooding risk whenever there are rains/typhoons (2) Residents near the Taal volcano must be cautious and prepare anytime because the Taal is considered as active volcano QUESTION : What can you consider as risk acceptance in your area/community?

ELEMENTS OF DISASTER RISK : 2. Risk Avoidance : an informed decision to avoid involvement in activities leading to disaster risk. EXAMPLES: (1) A manufacturing business not using certain flammable materials or chemicals that could start a fire, especially during the hot season (2) Adhering to building codes to prevent or reduce actual damage from hazards QUESTION : In the same area mentioned by your classmates, what do you think would be the risk avoidance that LGUs or the residents can establish?

ELEMENTS OF DISASTER RISK : Risk Reduction refers to the application of appropriate techniques to reduce the likelihood of risk consequences. EXAMPLE: (1) Installing smoke alarm system to preventing the loss or reducing the chance that fire will occur. (2) Requiring workers to use and wear safety equipment before entering a construction site QUESTION: What risk reduction measures can you apply in the school or in your own homes? Risk Transfer involves shifting of the burden of risk to another party. One of the most common forms of risk transfer is Insurance.

1. What is the difference between disaster and risk? 2. What are the examples of disaster risks?

Identify which element of disaster risk are the following: Moving place of residence from the foot of the volcano to the safer place. Residents near the Mayon volcano have already prepared their belongings in one place in case of emergency. Applying for car insurance. Building a fire wall during the construction of the house? Placing plug covers to all plug outlets .

As an adolescent, how would you show your initiative and responsibility in avoiding and even reducing the potential disaster risks?
