What is drug calculation Giving medications in the medical field involves not only knowing what and when to give but also how much to administer. Dosing calculations are just as important as knowing what to give.
IMPORTANCE OF DOSE CALCULATION Accurate pharmacy calculations prevent medical error underdosing a patient may lead to inadequate treatment, and overdosing a patient may lead to drug toxicity.
ADVANTAGES OF DOSE CALCULATION The skill allows the nurse to monitor a patient for possible side effects of a drug and make decisions in discontinuing the medication in case of a severe reaction. Patient assessment becomes easy and alternative therapy can be prescribed by the nurse in emergency cases
STEPS TO REDUCE MEDICATION ERRORS Read your containers. Measure twice. Label your syringe. Practice medication dosing often.
