Drug Use and Addictions

Prescription Drugs Psychoactive Drugs Tobacco Alcoholism Porn & Sex Addiction Self-mutilation / Cutting Gambling Overeating Anorexia/Bulimia Workaholic Shopaholic Certainly can’t cover everything, but what would be areas that could fall under drug use and a ddictions

According to NSDUH (Population figures include people ages 12 or older), in 2012, 23 million people in the United States needed treatment for alcohol/drug use . Of those 23 million people, however, only 4 million actually got treatment, making recovery even more challenging. Most people who succeed in treatment commit to a lifelong process of recovery: getting more treatment when needed; living a healthy lifestyle; and relying on family, friends, and others in recovery for support.

Genetics —some genes make people more prone to becoming addicted; Family and social environment—negative influences can include peer pressure; physical or sexual abuse; stress; poor relationships with parents or friends; and availability of drugs; Mental health—mental illness could place some people at a greater risk for addiction; Age—the younger a person is when drug use begins, the greater the chance for addiction. Why do some people become addicted while others do not? A person's risk for drug addiction is affected by several factors:

Cocaine Addiction The colored regions in the brain where nerve cells are working during a particular mental task.

Methamphetamine Addiction Methamphetamine abuse greatly reduces the binding of dopamine to dopamine transporters (highlighted in red and green) in the striatum, a brain area important in memory and movement.

November 24, 2015 What Are 3 Distinct Aspects of Addiction? 1. Craving for the Addictive Substance or Activity, such as heroin, prescription pain medications, or alcohol. Brain imaging has also shown that other pleasurable activities, such as gambling, shopping and sex, can affect the brains of some individuals in the same way as drugs and alcohol. 2. Loss of Control over the use of the substance or participation in the damaging behavior. 3. Continued use of the Addictive Substance or participation in the behavior even after the negative consequences have become apparent.

November 24, 2015 Dopamine, a naturally occurring chemical in the brain, floods the “pleasure center” when substances like alcohol, cocaine or nicotine are ingested. This brings on feelings of euphoria and wellbeing. The likelihood that a person will become addicted to a substance or behavior is directly related to how fast and reliable these things create the release of dopamine in the brain. A stronger, faster dopamine release will generally lead to abuse and dependency problems.

March 17, 2015 Exercise , Endorphins and Addiction Recovery Generally, most of the population sees regular exercise as a means to lose weight. But in fact, science has shown that maintaining even a moderate exercise regimen can reduce stress, fight the effects of depression, and create mental well being. For anyone recovering from alcohol or drug addiction, regular exercise should become an essential part of your new lifestyle. Note: Addictions can sometimes be used to fill up areas in life that are empty. You can replace addiction high with exercise high, but be careful that exercise does not become just another addiction …

March 17, 2015 Exercise , Endorphins and Addiction Recovery Physical activity releases endorphins, which are created in the central nervous system and the pituitary gland. They then interact with the opioid receptors in the brain. These are some of our pleasure and pain centers. A steady of flow of endorphins triggers a positive feeling in the body, and can act like analgesics, which means they lessen the perception of pain. Here are some of the other endorphin driven benefits of exercise : 75 minutes a week can add 2 years to your life 40 minutes 3x a week protects the brain’s memory 30 minutes a day can reduce Depression by 36% 60 minutes a day can cut obesity risk in half

Does the Bible have anything to say about addictions?

Belshazzar had a love of pleasure and gloried in his power as he shared in kingly authority! In his pride and arrogancy , with a reckless feeling of security Belshazzar “made a great feast to a thousand of his lords, and drank wine before the thousand .” Daniel 5:1 … All the attractions that wealth and power could c ommand added splendor to the scene . They drank wine, and praised the gods of gold, and of silver, of brass, of iron , of wood, and of stone .” As a result Belshazzar was told by God that “Thou art weighed in the balances , and art found wanting.”

Did Belshazzar have a problem with addiction? Maybe not, but there was clear s igns of recklessness, intoxication, u nrestrained sexual activity, and m aybe more . But if Belshazzar was Nebuchanezzar’s grandson then he w ould certainly remember what h appened to him. You don’t forget a bout an adult suddenly getting d own on all fours and grazing in a f ield like an ox. Daniel 4:33

Did Belshazzar have a problem with addiction? Like most any addiction, Belshazzar’s recklessness made h im feel euphoric. In one instance h e would feel confident and in control, but simultaneously releasing brain chemicals related to fear and stress — bad feelings that linger after the euphoria fades. Then the only way to treat the bad f eelings is to start the vicious c ycle all over again.

June 4, 2010 Benefits of Peer Recovery Support Systems It’s a long road back from addiction. The drug of choice can be alcohol, street or prescription drugs, or addictive gambling, spending, sex or eating. Although the faces of addiction are many, one outcome remains the same: all persons in recovery need the support of others. Peer recovery support services are services that are designed and delivered by people who, themselves, have experienced both substance abuse disorder and recovery. They know what it’s like to be an addict, to struggle with the daily pressures and stress, to overcome the guilt, sadness, confusion, to try to find a job, rebuild careers, relationships, and self-esteem.

So who did Belshazzar have to draw from? After the seven years in the field Nebuchadnezzar raised his eyes toward heaven, and his sanity was restored . Then he praised the Most High; he honored and “glorified him who lives forever” Daniel 4 :34, 37. And afterward Nebuchadnezzar praised, exalted, and glorifed the King of heaven , “because everything he does is r ight and all his ways are just .”

Drugs, Brains, and Behavior: The Science of Addiction Treatment must address the whole person

Based on self-efficacy data, researchers have estimated that Maintenance lasts from six months to about five years. While this estimate may seem somewhat pessimistic, longitudinal data in the 1990 Surgeon General’s report support this temporal estimate. After 12 months of continuous abstinence, 43% of individuals returned to regular smoking. It was not until 5 years of continuous abstinence that the risk for relapse dropped to 7% (USDHHS).

Shame is very common during relapse. Relationships and connections help reinforce resilience. There is no magic bullet, so remember, nothing changes if nothing changes.

Internet pornography is more accessible A vailability, can be in the other room looking at porn. In reality, it “disconnects” you from your actual relationship.

Sexual Image And Drug Craving Signals Linked In Brain Imaging Study January 30, 2008 A team of researchers at the University of Pennsylvania, led by Dr. Anna Rose Childress and Dr. Charles O’Brien, showed cocaine patients photos of drug-related cues like crack pipes and chunks of cocaine. Because Childress and her colleagues also found that the regions of the brain activated by drug images overlapped substantially with those activated by sexual images , it supports the scientific consensus that addictive drugs usurp brain regions that recognize natural rewards needed for survival, like food and sex. “We have a brain hard-wired to appreciate rewards, and cocaine and other drugs of abuse latch onto this system .”

So with Addiction there may be short term gain, but there is long term pain. So the opposite is true with the Cycle of Change, because success will be measured on short term pain and long term gain. We can walk into programs and be unhooked physically quite soon, but emotional and spiritual depends and can take some time… trust the process. Most addicts have very little or no hope. Your not alone! Shame is very common during relapse. Relationships and connections help reinforce resilience. There is no magic bullet, so remember, nothing changes if nothing changes.

Sometimes we know what needs to happen to counter addiction but are unwilling to : G et rid of internet. Password protect. Accountability partner when using computer. Practice Healthier Living Habits. Deal with past hurts and trauma. Have humility that you must stay connected and that you are “never” free from temptation. Choose your friends carefully. Take part in community anti-drug, tobacco and alcohol programs.
