The Indian Medical Council Act,
1956
Functions of Medical Council India:
1. To maintain Medical Register of medical
practitioners.
2. Medical education: Council maintains the
standard of U.G. & P.G. education.
3. Recognition of Foreign Medical
Qualifications.

4. Appeal Against Disciplinary Action: If the
name of any person Is removed from the
state medical register, he may appeal to
Central Govt. after exhausting all the
remedies under state medical council act.
5. Warning Notice: If standard of
professional conduct and codes of ethics
are not followed or if there is serious
professional misconduct, then warning
notice may be served to the doctor.

gangrene, etc. This includes vehicular

4) A doctor should report the commission of
a crime like murder, dacoity, etc to the police
or Magistrate (S. 39 CrPC). If the doctor
does not do so, he may be punished under
sec. 202 IPC.
5) If a doctor treats a person who has
attempted to commit suicide, his primary
responsibility is to treat the patient. He is
also legally bound to report the matter to the
police.
