DYEING AND PRINTING (FST 248)
-AISHWARYA P. NAIK

INTRODUCTION
Tie And Dye
Tie and dye is the process of folding , twisting, pleating, or crumpling fabric or a
garment and binding with string or rubber bands, followed by application of dye(s).
There are different dyes like natural dye, direct dye, reactive dye, disperse dye, indigo
dye, vat dye, etc.
In some areas these dyes are applied according to the fabrics. Mostly dyes are done in
light coloured fabrics.
Before dyeing any fabric it is suggested to wash the fabric to remove the starch
present on the surface of the fabric for better absorbencyof the dye.

TIE
The term ‘accordion fold‘ is used below in several of the
techniques. This simply means folding the fabricin a zig-
zag pattern, creating a series of pleats, as shown above.

1) Straight Lines Tie and Dye
Lay the fabric flat.
Place the fabric in diamond
shape and use any
cylindrical object.
Roll the fabric from the corner like
shown above image. .
Secure tightly with rubber bands or string
in centre portion.
PREPARATION OF
FABRIC FOLDING

Technique: Straight lines tying.
Fabric: Blended Cotton/ Cotton.
Dye Class: Direct dye.
Color: Primary
•Add 200 ml water in a
Beaker and add the color
dye.
•Place the beaker on heating plate.
•Once the boiling starts add Nacland Soda ash and leave
for boiling. Stir every 5-7 mins to avoid burning of fabric.
•After 30 mins take out the fabric and wash the fabric,
follow the instructions of “washing of fabric after dye”.

2) Circles Tie Dye Technique
Technique: Circles tying
Fabric: Cotton
Dye Class: Natural dye (Turmeric)
Color: Primary
•Lay the fabric flat.
•Tie small round objects such as marbles, stones or
make small aluminum foil balls into the fabric, hold in
place with string or elastic band.
PREPARATION OF
FABRIC FOLDING

DYE
•Boil water in a container and
add 2 tsp Turmeric powder
and leave for boiling.
•When it start boiling add the
tied fabric into it and leave for
30mins
Wash with running water and
rinse.
After Wash

Technique: Bullseye / Concentric patterntying
Fabric: Cotton
Dye Class: Natural dye (Turmeric)
Color: Primary
3)Bullseye / Concentric pattern Tie Dye Technique
•Lay the fabric flat.
•Pinch the fabricin the center.
•Pull the fabric upward into a cone shape.
•Secure with rubber bands or string to
each section.
DYE
Followed the previous dying process.
PREPARATION OF
FABRIC FOLDING

SAMPLE

Using that triangle shape as a
guide, repeat an accordion
fold until left with a single
‘triangle’ of fabric.
Tightly secure the triangle
with string.
4)Diamond Pattern Folded Tie Dye Technique
Technique: Diamond Pattern tying
Fabric: Cotton
Dye Class: Natural dye (Turmeric)
Color: Primary
Lay the fabric flat.
Accordion fold the fabric
from the bottom up.
Turn the long strip in a
vertical position and fold
the bottom corner of the
fabric at a90-degree
angle, creating a triangle
shape.

5) Stripes Tie Dye Technique
Technique: Stripes tying
Fabric: Cotton
Dye Class: Natural dye (Turmeric And Pomegranate)
Color: Primary
•Lay the fabric flat.
•Accordion fold the fabric from the bottom up.
•Divide into 4 sections.
•Secure with strings to each sections
PREPARATIO
N OF FABRIC
FOLDING

DYE
Squeeze out the juices
from the seeds of
pomegranate. Add
water in the ratio 1: 2
of total juice.
Dip the centre portion of the fabric
in juice about 5-6hrs.
Remove the fabric and
put the edges of fabric
into hot turmeric water.
Take out after 20-30
mins and leave to dry.
Later wash with
running water.

BLOCK PRINTING

Block printing on textiles is the process of printing patterns on textiles, usually of linen, cotton or silk, by
means of incised wooden blocks. It is the earliest, simplest and slowest of all methods of textile printing.
Block printing by hand is a slow process. It is, however, capable of yielding highly artistic results, some of
which are unobtainable by any other method.
