Why dysplastic features are important They are signs of premalignancy/malignancy. If potentially malignant lesion is diagnosed early, prognosis is better. Can be used to grade the dysplasia/carcinoma/sarcoma. Grade of the tumour/premalignancy is one of the deciding factors in treatment planning and prognosis of the patient.

Architectural Change Loss of stratification

Architectural changes Loss of Polarity of basal cells. D yskeratosis may be represented by individually keratinized cells or keratin pearls

Architectural changes Drop shaped rete ridges

Architectural Changes Atypical, increased and superficial mitosis

Abnormal and atypical mitosis

Architectural changes Loss of cohesion of cells

Nuclear Pleomorphism Cellular pleomorphism Anisonucleosis Anisocytosis Cellular changes

Cellular Change Increased Nucleocytoplasmic ratio Increased Number of size of nucleoli

Cellular Changes Hyperchromatism

Mild dysplasia

Moderate dysplasia

S evere dysplasia
