Late Language Emergence Early Intervention & Hailey

Population Introduction What does it mean? Who does it affect ? What might it look like? Signs/Symptoms Table Of Contents 01 02 03

Therapy Outlook Assessment How can we determine a child has this condition? How might we treat a child? What would targets look like? Possible Targets Table Of Contents 4 5 6

Late Language Emergence (late talkers) This is often categorized as delay that is unrelated to any other disorder or skill. Often thought to be present if parents or teachers notice a child not using at least 50 words and using 2 word combinations by the age of 2 (24 months), but seems typical in all other aspects.

15% 17 % 13.5 % Prevalences in 2 year olds Prevalences in 18-23 month olds Prevalences in 30- 36 month olds Who is Effected?

Boys are 3 times more likely to exhibit LLE over girls P revalence in both expressive and receptive language vs. just in expressive language LLE Prevalence in toddler age twins 3 X 38 % 13.1% VS. 19.1%

Signs and Symptoms Delayed Speech Structures Other Possible Delays Sentence Structure Lack of mature syllable structures limited use of different consonants and vowels Delayed Comprension few uses of symbolic gestures Shorter Sentences not grammatically appropriate BUT… No hearing difficulties they partake in appropriate play no cognitive impairments

How? Overall? Where? What to Use? For LLE diagnosis, multiple sources of information is necessary. Results need to be contextualized because communication is only one aspect of a child’s interactions. Ideally, screening and assessment happens in the child’s home or a childcare setting. Language sampling, caregiver or parent interviews or reports , and developmental observations are all sources of information to be used. Assessment To assess for LLE, a broad check of speech and language development and periodic monitoring by screening and observation is typical.

Treatment: EARLY INTERVENTION! Intervention Route: The Goal: The goal is to stimulate language development and teach language skills, the earlier the better. If no other developmental delays/disabilities are present with LLE, usually monitoring or indirect language stimulation is utilized. If developmental delays/ disabilities are present, direct therapy is used.

What does this therapy Look Like?

What is Early Intervention? Early intervention refers to timely services for children, birth to 3, who exhibit communication delays or disorders. Early Intervention can improve a child’s development and their future success. *A key factor to early intervention is working closely with caregivers/parents.*

Possible Targets “The client will produce two word combinations with minimal cues from the clinician, with 75% accuracy.” “The client will verbally express wants and needs during play, with 75% accuracy.” “ The client will use functional vocabulary to make requests during structured play, with 80% accuracy”

Who Would Benefit ? All children with any sort of delay or disorder! THE EARLIER THE BETTER!!
