Diastrophism is a process by which the Earth's surface is changed through rock movements and displacements. Almost every second, the seismograph detects these movements which range from very weak to very strong movements.

4. Divergent Movement Also known as Spreading. Plates move away from each other. This produces very deep cracks on the continental and oceanic plates. These cracks give way allowing molten lava to surface thus pushing the plates apart. When this happens on ocean floor, it results in seafloor spreading as in the Mid-Atlantic ridge.
