EARTH’S MOVEMENTS

DIASTROPHISM It is a process which the Earth’s surface is changed through rock movements and displacements. Almost every second, the seismograph detects these movements which range from very weak to very strong movements. These movements produce different interactions along the plate boundaries.

Types of Plate Boundary Movements Divergent Movement Convergent Movement Transform Plate Movement

Divergent Movement Also known as Spreading. Plates move away from each other. This produces very deep cracks on the continental and oceanic plates. These cracks give way allowing molten lava to surface thus pushing the plates apart. When this happens on ocean floor, it results in seafloor spreading as in the Mid-Atlantic ridge.

Divergent Movement Eurasia and North American plates are separating at the rate of five centimeters per year.
