2. Earth Day commemorates Earth's unique place in the universe. First Earth Day was conceived by Senator Gaylord Nelson as an environmental “teach-in” on April 22, 1970. Celebrating Earth Day reminds us about Mother Earth. It educates the public on issues of concern, to mobilize political will and resources to address global problems, and to celebrate and reinforce achievements of humanity. Source : www.un.org

3. Earth Day : Story behind the Scene   On January 28, 1969 , a well drilled by Union Oil Platform A off the coast of Santa Barbara , California, blew out. More than three million gallons of oil spewed, killing over 10,000 seabirds, dolphins, seals, and sea lions. As a reaction to this disaster, activists were mobilized to create environmental regulation, environmental education, and Earth Day. 4. Significance Increased global warming , changing weather patterns and depleting resources . People have been witnessing shortage of food. Biodiversity loss also means that we are losing, before discovery, many of nature's chemicals and genes. Terrestrial biodiversity is influenced by climate variability (i.e. drought, flooding) . 5. Theme of the Year - 2024 The 54th anniversary of Earth Day is centred around the theme of “Planet vs. Plastics” in honour of worldwide efforts to halt global warming. Climate Change : A Major Concern Understanding IPCC’s 3 Special Reports: The Ocean and Cryosphere in a Changing Climate focuses, for the first time, on the importance of education and climate literacy. Climate Change and Land Global Warming of 1.5°C It warns that average global temperatures could breach the 1.5-degree level as early as 2030. Knowledge for action The more decisively and earlier we act, the more able we will be to address unavoidable changes, manage risks, improve our lives and achieve sustainability for ecosystems and people around the world –today and in the future. Highlight is the urgency of prioritizing timely, ambitious and coordinated action to address widespread and enduring changes empower people, communities and governments to tackle the unprecedented transitions in all aspects of society; This challenge requires a coordinated response. Kicking the Plastic Bag Addiction: A Plan for Response to Plastic Pollution : Representatives from nations around the world met in New York on April 20, 2018 for a roundtable co-hosted by the Government of Quebec, Earth Day Network, and New York University. Many other events like School, colleges host organic food sale to raise money and help plant trees. Activities like recycling games & environmental arts and crafts. 10. Say No To Pollution Avoid using plastics , say no to plastics while shopping and food order, take reusable bag. Ask family members to take a walk or bicycle ride for small distance.
