ECHO VIRUS ECHO VIRUS – Enteric Cytopathic Human Orpan The echovirus is one of the many types of viruses that live in the digestive system It affect many part of the body and form a skin Rashes

TAXONOMY family : Picornaviridae genus : Enterovirus species : Human Enterovirus B (HEV-b)

MORPHOLOGY Non Enveloped Icosahedral viral particle 30nm in diameter Capsid composed of 60 subunits and 4 proteins VP1-VP4 Single stranded RNA genome

TRANSMISSION spread through the fecal-oral route Ingestion of contaminated foods (washed with fecally contaminated water) Drinking contaminated water (or in swimming pools).

PATHOGENISIS Ingestion of facally contaminated material, viral replication begins in the pharynx or gut. It replicate within 1-3days after ingestion The maximal duration of viral excretion is 3-4 weeks in the pharynx 5-6 weeks in stool

COMPLICATION Virus spreads to regional lymph nodes and cause viremia The spread spreads to all parts of body Severe neonatal diseases Aseptic meningitis Encephalitis Myocardities pericarditis

SYMPTOMS More than 90% of echovirus infections are asyptomatic Skin rashes Upper respiratory distress Sore throat Mouth sore Vomitting Nausea lethargy

LABORATORY DIAGNOSIS SPECIMEN Rectal swab Stool sample Throat swab Cerebrospinal fluid culture IMAGE STUDIES Radiography Electrocardiography RT-PCR Serology

PREVENTION AND TREATMENT Follow Good hygiene Keep your hands and environment clean Pleconaril - antiviral drug Intravenous gamma globulin (IVIG) Therapy for immunocompromised patients No vaccine are available for echo virus
