Vaccine green lane? by P h i lipp i ne S t a r M a y 12 , 202 1 BioNTech, the German partner of US pharmaceutical giant Pfizer in the development of the world’s groundbreaking COVID vaccine, has finalized a deal to set up its Southeast Asian vaccine production hub in Singapore. BioNTech expects the facility to be operational by 2023, producing “several hundreds of millions” of mRNA-based vaccine doses a year. The deal follows the announcement last month of a partnership between French pharmaceutical company Sanofi with the Economic Development Board of Singapore to set up a 400-million-euro vaccine production facility in the city-state over the next five years. Both BioNTech and Sanofi said they picked Singapore because it is an innovation hub with global connectivity and the needed talents for the projects as well as, according to the German drugmaker, the “perfect business climate.” BioNTech admitted that being the host country, Singapore would get “a certain percentage” of the vaccines produced.

R&R for terrorists by Philippine Star May 13, 2021 The Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters has been tagged in numerous attacks against both government and civilian targets, including participation in the slaughter of 44 members of the police Special Action Force in Mamasapano, Maguindanao in January 2015. In December last year, BIFF bandits had tried taking control of Datu Piang town in Maguindanao. Last March, a bomb attack by the group in Datu Saudi Ampatuan town left two persons dead and two others wounded. And yet when five truckloads of over 100 BIFF gunmen arrived last Friday in the banana farming town of Datu Paglas also in Maguindanao, news reports said the bandits were practically welcomed with open arms by the local government ostensibly because it was Ramadan. A BIFF spokesman even said they were merely in town to rest. Resting for the group meant taking over the public market for about six hours as government forces arrived to drive them out of town. The gunmen, according to reports, were mostly young men up to age 25, with some believed to be only 15. How can the state allow a group illegally bearing arms to “rest” at the expense of a terrorized populace? Turning Datu Paglas into a place for BIFF rest and recreation allows the bandits to replenish supplies and recharge their batteries, boosting their strength and capabilities to further sow terror.

#’Unstoppable:’ Red Cross service shines during pandemic by Manila Bulletin May 10, 2021 #’Unstoppable,’ a word that aptly describes the Chairman of the Philippine Red Cross, Senator Richard Gordon, whose infectious dynamism has animated thousands of volunteers in rendering cheerful service to communities afflicted by disasters and calamities. Coronavirus infections have breached the million mark with a surge in new cases, placing emergency and critical care facilities under great pressure. In response, the Red Cross is setting up field hospitals, quarantine facilities and scaling up existing testing laboratories, public information campaigns and relief activities. Everywhere the Red Cross sign is visible, people are assured that the hard blows dealt by calamities and disasters will be softened by the caring support extended by volunteers who are imbued with the Filipino brand of malasakit, or compassionate care.

Open NCR to new ecozones by Philippine Daily Inquirer May 10, 2021 The plea of the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (Peza) for Malacañang to lift the ban on new ecozones in Metro Manila deserves serious consideration by the Duterte administration, for many reasons. Foremost of these are that it can alleviate the glut in office space in the capital, and help address the record-high unemployment caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and the ensuing economic downturn. Office vacancy in Metro Manila is projected to rise to 12.5 percent this year, the worst since 2003, as many Philippine offshore gaming operators streamed out of the country in the wake of COVID-19, and a number of information technology-business process outsourcing (IT-BPO) companies streamlined their office space requirements, according to real estate services firm Colliers International Philippines. Property consulting firm KMC Savills Inc., on the other hand, predicted that Metro Manila’s office property space would breach the 10-percent vacancy rate for the first time in more than a decade and remain at the double-digit level in the next two years amid the challenging environment brought about by the public health and economic crises.

On March 7, 2021, more than 200 Chinese ships amassed over the Julian Felipe Reef in the Kalayaan Island Group (KIG), a part of the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone (EEZ). Over the past few years, the Chinese government has adhered to the command of ‘might makes r ig h t ’ a nd i s c o n t in ua l l y , a n d ille g a l l y , a ss e r t ing d omin a n c e o v er t h e W e s t Philippine Sea.

Take a stand
The BODY of the editorial Give FOUR ways why you are taking your stand Reason # 1 for position Firstly, there is a need to establish authority over the West Philippine Sea to protect it. Some may say that the nation is incapable of defending against Chinese troops, but such is false. To say that the country is defenseless might be accurate, but the nation itself is not powerless. The Hindustan Times has reported that India has signed a pact with the Philippines to procure Brahmos missile, the fastest operational missile globally. Even without such technology, several countries have shown support for the Philippines, including Japan and the United States (US). Last month, Germany stated its plans to send a warship near the disputed waters as a sign to counter Chinese territorial claims. Nonetheless, simply manning the islands might be enough deterrent for Chinese vessels to occupy them.
An ARM of the editorial On the other hand, the consequences of standing up against China would be severe, especially as China vows to bring the Philippines economic benefits. President Rodrigo Duterte made a point of not forcefully and physically retaking maritime features from the West Philippine Sea to not incur the wrath of China in his fifth state of the Nation Address (SONA). The Philippines also enjoys 600,000 donated Sinovac shots. Opposing view points are rebutted
The BODY of the editorial Give FOUR ways why you are taking your stand Reason # 2 for position But still, China is untrustworthy. As a response to the continued presence of Chinese ships in KIG, the Department of Foreign Affairs had sent multiple diplomatic protests. The continued Chinese activity in the region proves that China had practically trashed such diplomatic protests even though Chinese Ambassador Huang Xilian stated that China would settle conflicts with the Philippines through diplomatic channels. With this, the country may not get as much economic benefits as China may suggest.
The BODY of the editorial Give FOUR ways why you are taking your stand Reason # 3 for position Also, the livelihoods of Filipino fishers were at risk. A last year’s study by Yale School of the Environment determined that China is responsible for half of the world’s fishing activities. According to Homonhon Environmental Rescue Organization (HERO), the Philippines is being stolen of up to 240,000 kilos of marine r e s o u r c e s b y C h i n e se v e ss e l s p o s t e d a t K I G . O v e rf i s h i n g w il l n o t o n l y o n l y a f f e c t f i s h e r me n, but it will also affect citizens as the price for fish w o u l d s k y r o c k e t, e s p e c i a ll y a s th e e c o n o m y continues to decline due to the pandemic. Taking action against those Chinese vessels should be a top national priority.
The BODY of the editorial Give FOUR ways why you are taking your stand Reason # 4 for position Moreover, China is a disregarding navigational c o u n try n o t o r i o u s f o r freedom. There have been several instances of China refusing to drop blockades to seas of global commons, even blocking innocent passage, despite calls by the United Nations (UN). The presence of Chinese ships endangers Filipino fishermen. In fact, a Chinese boat rammed, sunk, and abandoned a Philippine fishing ship Gem-Ver in what came to be known as the 2019 Recto Bank incident. China has yet to pay monetary compensation to the 22 Filipinos whose lives were endangered and to the ship owner even a f t er n e a r l y t w o I f n o t h i n g i s d o n e to years. t h e s e a t r o c i ties w i l l k e e p on s a f eg u a r d f i s h e r s , piling up.

B es i des , t h e 2 1 6 Hagu e ru l i ng validates t e r r i t or i a l the c l ai m s . Philippines’ I n t ern a ti o n a l rules exist to set the limits of all nations. Without it, stability and coexistence will not prevail. The insufficiency of government intervention against China would make the arbitral ruling nothing more than just a snippet of history.
One LEG of the editorial Overall, China has been continually sullying the law, the aquatic resources, and the freedom of the Philippines. The nation must take a stand against these offenses by being vigilant and by deepening diplomatic connections. The Philippines have already gained international sympathy because of the transgressions of China against the national territory. The Philippines must deepen its ties with other countries through operations like joint military exercises. Perhaps, the Philippines can emphasize the global consequences of China’s actions during international conferences. Furthermore, manning the unoccupied islands within the West Philippine Sea might hinder the Chinese maritime militia from occupying them. The combined force of the Philippines and its allies is crucial to settle disputes against China. Present a logical solution
The other LEG of the editorial ‘Might makes right’ is a false notion. Failure to recognize such a fact is nothing short of tyranny. Instead, might protect rights. It is a measure to safekeep the sovereignty, the citizens, and the territorial integrity when attempts for diplomatic protests have failed. In line with this, the Philippines must urgently beseech its military might over the West Philippine Sea. Recap the staff stance JAMISE JIRO G. PANCHO Grade 10 student Carmona National High Schoo l
