The Electromagnetic Spectrum
Theelectromagnetic spectrum represents the range of energy
from low energy, low frequency radio waves with long
wavelengths up to high energy, high frequency gamma waves
with small wavelengths.

Remote Sensing components
Platform
•The vehicle/medium that carries the sensor
Platform Types (Space, Air and Ground)
satellite, aircraft, balloon and vehicles etc
Sensors
•A device that collects EMR and converts it to a signal that could be
recorded either in numerical data or an image.

Remote Sensors
Passive sensors
•Detects the emitted EMR from natural sources (ambient energy
e.g. the sun).
Active Sensor
Detects reflected EMR from objects that are irradiated from artificially-
generated sources, such as radar.
Sensors that provide their own source of electromagnetic radiation to illuminate
the objects
