LIFE SKETCH
•Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was born on September 5,1888,at
Tiruttani, near Madras, in South India.
•His father’s name was Sarvepalli Veerasami, mother’s name
was Sitamma.
•Radhakrishnan was married in 1906,at the tender age of 18
and while still a student, to Sivakamamma.
•Radhakrishnan wrote his thesis for the M. A. Degree on “the
Ethics of Vadanta and its Metaphysical Presuppositions”.
•Hisphilosophy professor was Dr. Alfred George Hogg.
•Radhakrishnan’s thesis was published when he was only 20.
TEACHER’S DAY
▪In 1962 when Dr. Radhakrishnan became president of India that his
birthday in September 5, came to be observed as ‘Teacher’s Day”.
▪When he became President, some of his students and friends
requested him to allow them to celebrate his birthday, 5th September.
He replied, "Instead of celebrating my birthday, it would be my proud
privilege if 5th September is observed as Teachers Day." Since then,
his birthday has been celebrated in India as Teachers’ Day.
CURRICULUM
▪Dr. Radhakrishnan was an idealist. His curriculum to these of idealism.
▪He suggested Yoga, Religion, Morality, Geography, General science,
Agriculture, Political science, Ethics, Literature, and philosophy for the
students.
▪Intellectual and moral activities which from base of Dr. Radhakrishnan’s
curriculum poetry, art and mathematics must be tought.
▪He strongly favoured modern means of education and recommended the
study of professional subjects like agriculture, commerce, engineering and
technology,law and medicine at higher levels.

ROLE OF TEACHER
▪Love pupils is the first essential quality of a successful teacher.
▪A true teacher is one who removes the spiritual blindness of the pupil
and take him to the eternal light.
▪A teacher must be a committed man, having a devotion to teaching
besides their knowledge and scholarship.
▪In order to develop character in the educand the educator should
himself develop his own character.
▪The teacher should have self-control and humanist standpoint.
MEANING OF EDUCATION
▪True education can solve many problems of country as it is not only
the information but knowledge that becomes wisdom.
▪By which one can understand the right and the wrong and make
positive changes in life.
▪Therefore, Radhakrishnan calls education an “instrument for social,
economic and cultural change.”
▪Education is not only in knowledge and skill, but it is to help us to live
with others.
AIM OF EDUCATION
1.To ensure the balanced growth of the individual.
2.To instil self discipline i.e, attaining the sense of balance
of all the facilities of an individual.
3.To know the reality. To help man to know his inner
essence.
4.To help the individual to attain the spiritual wisdom.
5.To attain people for democracy and freedom.
6.To train for self development.
CONTRIBUTIONS OF DR. RADHAKRISHNAN
▪He introduced Western idealism into Indian philosophy and was the
first scholar of importance to provide a comprehensive interpretation
of India's religious and philosophical literature to English speaking
people.
▪The report of the University Education Commission, also called Dr.
Radhakrishnan Commission, is an important document in the
development of university education in India. The has served as
authentic reference to educational reforms in many countries in the
East amd in the West.
▪As the chairman of the University Education Commission, he was
instrumental in planning the present higher education in India.
