INTRODUCTION
TeachersDayiscelebratedeveryyearonSeptember5to
markthebirthanniversaryofDrSarvepalliRadhakrishnan,who
wasthefirstvicepresidentofIndia(1952-1962)andalsoa
teacherandphilosopher.Thisdayisobservedtohonourthebond
betweenthechildrenandtheirmentorswhoinfluencetheirlivesin
several ways.
DrRadhakrishnanwasalsothesecondpresidentofIndia
(1962-1967).Despiteallhisaccomplishmentsandcontributions,
DrRadhakrishnanremainedateacherthroughouthislife.He
believedthattrueteachersarethosewhohelpusthinkfor
ourselves, so they should be the best minds in the nation.
InIndia,September5ismarkedasTeacher'sDay,whereas
WorldsTeacher'sDayiscelebratedeveryyearonOctober5.This
dayisanimportanteventinbothteachers'andstudents'lives.
Thisisadaytohonorandshowgratitudetoallmentorsand
teachers.AcrossIndia,schoolsandhighereducationalinstitutions
celebrate this day by paying a tribute to Dr Radhakrishnan.

DR. S. RADHAKRISHNAN(1888-1975)
LIFE SKETCH
Dr.SarvepalliRadhakrishnan,anacademic,
philosopher,andstatesmanwasbornonSeptember5,1888ina
BrahminfamilylivedatTiruttani,averysmalltempletowntothe
North-WestofMadras(atpresentChennai).HisfatherSarvepalli
Veeraswamiwasasubordinaterevenueofficialintheserviceofa
localzamindarandSitammawashismother.Hegothisearly
educationinTiruttani.Radhakrishnanwasveryintelligentandwas
awardedscholarshipsthroughouthisacademiclife.Hewon
scholarshipatVoorhees’CollegeandcompletedhisHighSchool
in1902fromVoorheesCollege,Vellore.Afterwinningthe
scholarshipofChristianCollege,Madrashecompletedhis
graduationin1904andpostgraduationinPhilosophyin1906
fromthesamecollege.Hepresentedadissertationtitled“The
EthicsofVedantaanditsMetaphysicalPresuppositions”.From
1909,histeachingcareerbeganandheservedasLecturerin
PhilosophyatPresidencyCollege,Madras.Hehadundergone
licentiateinTeaching(L.T)trainingin1910attheTeacher’s
TrainingCollege,toqualifyforthepermanentpostofAssistant
professor.In1916,hewaselevatedtothePostofProfessorand
placedinGovt.ArtsCollege,Rajahmundry(A.P).In1936,hewas
appointedasProfessorinOxfordUniversity,London.In1939,he
wasappointedasViceChancellorofBanarasHinduUniversity.
HechairedtheUniversityEducationCommissionin1948.Hewas
giventheassignmentofAmbassadortoUSSRinJuly12,1949.

Becauseofhislearningandwisdomhisimpactinpoliticalcircles
raisedtonewheights.RajyaSabhaelectedhimasthefirst
ChairmanandVicePresidentin1952.Hewasappointedas
secondPresidentofIndiain1962.WhenhebecamePresident,
someofhisstudentsandfriendsrequestedhimtoallowthemto
celebratehisbirthday,5thSeptember.Hereplied,"Insteadof
celebratingmybirthday,itwouldbemyproudprivilegeif5th
SeptemberisobservedasTeachersDay."Sincethen,hisbirthday
hasbeencelebratedinIndiaasTeachers’Day.HegotBharat
Ratna,thehighestnationalawardin1967.Dr.Radhakrishnan’s
contributiontoeducationhasbeenuniqueandirreplaceable.He
passed away in 1975.

canunderstandtherightandthewrongandmakepositive
changesinlife.Therefore,Radhakrishnancallseducationan

isnotonlyinknowledgeandskill,butitistohelpustolivewith
othersi.e.educationisnotonlytoinduceinformationandget
trainedinsomeskillsbutitistoteachestheartofliving;inculcate
loveforother,inducecreativityandcriticalthinkingpowerto
tacklewiththeadversesituationsinshorteducationisasecond
birthtoman.“Educationmakesamancompletephysically,

timebothinIndiaandabroad.Dr.Radhakrishnanwasconferred
onthehighestawardofthenation,BharatRatnain1954forhis
commendable service to the country and mankind as well.
