THE POTENTIAL OF EE IN GLOBAL,REGIONAL AND LOCAL ENERGY CONTEXT Eng. Khadar A. Farah November 2024
Objective of the presentation This presenatation aims to highlight to policymakers in Somaliland the importance and potential benefits/contribution of energy efficiency to the national energy sector and explain on why the country should promote energy efficiency. The experience of EE&C programs in many countries demonstrates the potential for substantial electricity peak demand reduction and energy savings with attractive cost/benefit ratios. 2

(This includes practices like turning off lights, fans, other major electrical loads when not in use) ENERGY PYRAMID (Replacing the existing electrical loads with energy efficient appliances such as smart LED lights) (Solar, wind, Biomass energy etc.)
EXPLANATION I llustrating the idea that minimizing energy usage through conservation should be the primary focus, then optimizing how energy is used through efficiency measures , and lastly supplementing with renewable sources to achieve a sustainable energy system; essentially prioritizing actions that reduce energy demand before seeking new energy sources . W e ought to understand that we need EE PROJECTS just the same as RE PROJECTS.

Energy efficiency (EE) Permanent reduction in consumption across the load curve. Provides same or better energy service with fewer kWh. Load Management (or Demand Response) Temporary reduction in consumption at times of system peak. May be associated with curtailment of service. Change: Technology, Price , Behavior, Standards DSM: Two Main Flavors
Need for DR? It can be seen that 100 MW demand occurs for 3 to 4 hours. The possibility of shifting or reducing it needs to be evaluated.

MOST ENERGY IS USED FOR LIGHTING , HVAC and Cooling like refrigeration
Efficient lighting (CFL) roll out Pilot financed by the Government in 2009/10, implemented by Kenya Power. Involved distribution of 1.25Million CFLs to residential customers countrywide Cost of the Project around $4 Million Impact: Peak Demand Reduction 48 MW Energy savings 61GWh/Yr Energy Cost savings KSh72M/Yr Reduction in fuel Costs KSh872M/Yr Avoided gen. expansion KSh 5 bn GHG emission abated 55,000tons CO 2 / year). 22 Compare this to building a 48 MW power plant!!
POTENTIAL SAVINGS GLOBALLY THAT IS WHY DSM IS KNOWN AS VIRTUAL POWER PLANT!

On COOPERATION: Regional Energy Efficiency Centers like EACREEE to IMPLEMENT EELA PROJET To become a member of EAC: 1. Understand the EAC Treaty: Familiarize yourself with the EAC Treaty, which outlines the principles and procedures for membership and collaboration within the community. 2. Meet Criteria: Ensure your country meets the eligibility criteria set by the EAC, including political stability, economic viability, and shared values with existing member states. 3. Submit Membership Application: Prepare and submit a formal application for membership to the EAC Secretariat, including the necessary documents that demonstrate adherence to the community's goals and standards. 4. Participate in Regional Initiatives: Actively engage in regional initiatives and discussions related to energy and renewable energy policies to signal commitment to EACREEE's objectives. 5. Collaborate with Existing Members: Build relationships with current EAC member states to promote cooperative efforts regarding renewable energy and energy efficiency projects.

A typical breakdown of B uilding E nergy C odes often includes four main sections Lighting: This section outlines specific standards for lighting fixtures, controls, and power densities to ensure energy-efficient lighting design. Air Conditioning: This part specifies requirements for HVAC systems, including minimum efficiency ratings for equipment, system design, and controls to optimize cooling and heating. Electrical Installations: This section covers energy efficiency standards for electrical wiring, power distribution, and appliances within a building. Lift and Escalator: This part addresses the energy performance of elevators and escalators, often requiring specific motor technologies and control systems for efficient operation. Performance-based: This approach allows designers to demonstrate compliance with energy codes by using building energy modeling software to simulate the overall energy consumption of a building, providing more flexibility in choosing energy-efficient solutions across various systems.
