equipment’soperatinghours.
•Dutycycle-Machinessuchaslargeelectricmotorshavevarying
loadsandhence,differentpowerrequirements.
•Actualpowerconsumed-Forelectricpowerusers,thisisbasedon
either3-phasecurrent/voltagereadingsorpoweranalyzer
measurements(e.g.,directkWwhichincorporatespowerfactor).

andflowmeterswithtotalizationcanbesourcesofmeasurementof
air,water,steam,oiletc..

•Opportunitiesforenergysavingscanrangefromthe
simplest,suchaslightingretrofits,tothemost
complexsuchastheinstallationofacogeneration
plant.Theimportantthingtorememberistofocus
onmajorenergyusersandareas.Alwaysapplythe
80/20rule,focusonopportunitiesthatprovide80%
ofthesavingbutrequire20%input.Afterthe
preliminaryidentificationofopportunities,spend
moretimeonthosewhichhaveshorterpayback
periods.

•Theidentifiedenergyconservationopportunities
shouldbeanalyzedintermsofthecostsof
implementingtheprojectversusthebenefitsthat
canbegained.Ifyouwantto,say,installaheatplate
exchangertorecoverwasteheat,youneedto
calculatethetotalcostofinstallationandcompare
thatwiththesavingsyouwillderivefromrecovering
wasteheat.Itmakessensetogoonwiththeproject
ifthereisanetpositivebenefitfromtheproject.

•Afterpassingthecostbenefittest,anactionplan
shouldbedevelopedtoensurethattheopportunities
identifiedareimplemented.Theactionplanshould
