About This Presentation

An electric motor is an electrical machine that converts electrical energy into mechanical energy. Most electric motors operate through the interaction between the motor's magnetic field and electric current in a wire winding to generate force in the form of rotation of a shaft.

WHAT IS ELECTRIC
MOTOR?
An electric motor is a
device for
converting electrical
energy into mechanical
energy in the form of
rotation.

How the Motor works?
It is based on the principle that when
a current-carrying conductor is placed
in a magnetic field, it experiences a
mechanical force whose direction is
given by Fleming's Left-hand rule and
whose magnitude is given by

Armature or
rotor.
Commutator.
Brushes.
Axle.
Field magnet.

Main Classification of Electric Motor

Alternating Current Motor
The motor that converts the alternating current
into mechanical power by using an
electromagnetic induction phenomenon is called
an AC motor.

This motor is driven by an alternating current.

The stator and the rotor are the two most
important parts of the AC motors.

Alternating Current Motor

Synchronous Alternating Current Motor
A synchronous electric
motor is an AC motor in
which, at steady state, the
rotation of the shaft is
synchronized with the
frequency of the supply
current;
the rotation period is exactly
equal to an integral number
of AC cycles.

Induction Alternating Current Motor
The motor which works on
the principle of
electromagnetic induction is known
as the induction motor.

The electromagnetic induction is
the phenomenon in which the
electromotive force induces across
the electrical conductor when it is
placed in a rotating magnetic field.

Single Phase Induction Alternating Current
Motor
A Single Phase Induction Motor consists of a single
phase winding which is mounted on the stator of
the motor and a cage winding placed on the rotor.

Three Phase Induction Alternating Current
Motor
The three-phase AC induction motor is a rotating electric
machine that is designed to operate on three phase supply.

Three Phase Induction Alternating Current
Motor
The DC motor is a machine that transforms
electric energy into mechanical energy in
form of rotation. Its movement is produced by
the physical behavior of electromagnetism.

DC motors have inductors inside, which
produce the magnetic field used to generate
movement.
Direct Current Motor

Types of Direct Current Motor

Seperately excited Direct
Current Motor
A separately
excited dc motor is
a motor whose field
circuit is supplied
from a separate
constant-voltage
power supply,

Self excited Direct Current
Motor
Self excited DC motor, the field winding is
connected either in series or in parallel or partly
in series, partly in parallel to the armature
winding.

It is further classified in to
1. Series Wound
2. Shunt Wound
3. Compound Wond

APPLICATIONS OF ELECTRIC
MOTOR
The applications of electrical
motor mainly include blowers, fans,
machine tools, pumps, turbines,
power tools, alternators,
compressors, rolling mills, ships,
movers, paper mills.
