Slide Content
1. AVWE- It is a disturbance in space and time carrying energy. 2.SECRT- It is highest point in a wave . 3. TGHURO- It is the lowest point in a wave . 4. LMUPTDEAI- It is the distance from the midpoint to the highest ( or lowest ) point of the wave .
5. ENEVTGWLAH-It is the distance between two successive identical parts of a wave. 6 . NEQFCEURY- It refers to the number of waves produced in one second 7 . ARGNE- It refers to the extent or the limits between which variation is possible.
Mechanical waves Electromagnetic wave Requires a medium to propagate Does not require a medium to propagate It can travel to empty space or vacuum longitudinal and transverse wave Only transverse wave Example: water waves, seismic wave, rope and spring wave, and sound wave Example: light, microwave, x-ray , gamma ray , UV, infrared Can transmit energy but not matter Can transmit energy but not matter
ELECTROMAGNETIC WAVE( EM WAVE) -is a waved that is created as a result of vibrations between an electric field and magnetic field. -EM waves travel through a vacuum. -They travel in a vacuum at a speed of 3x10s m/s. -includes radio waves, microwaves, infrared, visible light, ultraviolet, X-ray, and gamma ray.
Scientists and their significant contributions in the development of electromagnetic wave theory
HANS CHRISTIAN OERSTED (DANISH PHYSICIST CHEMIST) Showed how a current carrying wire behaves like a magnet; a changing electric field produces magnetic field and a changing magnetic field in turn produces electric field .
James Clerk Maxwell Scottish Physicist Theorized that the mutual generation and propagation of electric field and magnetic field conceived as a form of moving energy can be carried by what he called an electromagnetic wave. He also formulated equations combining theories of electricity and magnetism and m/s in 8 indicated that EM waves travel at 3x10 empty space just light does.
Henry Hertz German Physicist Designed an experimental setup that enabled him to generate and detect electromagnetic waves.
Andre-Marie Ampere French Physicist and Mathematician Demonstrated the magnetic effect base on the direction of current
Ultraviolet Radiation Ultraviolet radiation lies just beyond the violet end of the visible spectrum.Ultraviolet waves have shorter wavelengths than the visible light and carry more energy .
X-rays X-rays come just after the ultraviolet rays. They are of shorter wavelength but carries higher energy than the UV.
Gamma Rays Gamma rays lie at the other end of the electromagnetic spectrum. They are shortest in wavelength and highest in frequency. They carry the highest amount of energy, thus, they are more dangerous. Gamma rays are emitted by stars and some radioactive substances. They can only be blocked with lead and thick concrete. Gamma rays are very strong that they can kill living cells. Gamma rays are used to treat cancer through the process called radiotherapy. They are also used for sterilization of drinking water.
