ELECTRONIC WARFARE (WAR IN FORTH DIMENSIONS)
•Electronic warfare is an actioninvolving the use of the
electromagneticspectrum{EMS} or directedenergyto controlthe
spectrum, attack an enemy ,orimpede enemy assaults.
•The purpose of electronic warfare is deny to opponent the advantage
of –and ensure friendly unimpeded access to the enemy
Electromagnetic Spectrum.
•EW can be applied from air ,sea, landand also from space by crewed
or unscrewed systems,andcan target communication’ssystem,Radar
and other military and civilian assets.
Electromagnetic spectrum is the range of all types of electromagnetic radiation.
Like –Radio wave , Microwave, Infrared, Visible, Ultraviolet,X-Ray and Gammaray.
•Electronic warfare has revolutionary change into the field of warfare
•The greatest advancement in technology in recent history has been in the area of electronic,
practically every face of modern Military operation, from weapons control to communication
has become depend upon system that operate in the electromagnetic spectrum
Electromagnetic spectrum
Subdivision
Electronic warfare consist of three subdivisions Electronic attack (EA), Electronic
protection (EP) , and Electronic support (ES)
ECM (electronic counter measure ) or Electronic attack-
Electronic attack is also know as electronic counter measure (ECM), involve the
Offensive use of electromagnetic energy weapons, directed energy weapons or anti
radiation weapons to attack personnel, facilities or equipment with the intent of
neutralizing or destroying enemy combat including human life .
•It is also called as Electromagnetic jamming
•Jamming Are two types
1.Mechanical jamming
2.Electrical jamming
•Mechanical jamming are also thee type
1.Chaff Jaming(ECM)
2Corner reflector jamming
3 Decoys jamming
2. Electrical /active jamming
•In this we produced highly concentrate signals
There are two types of electrical jamming –
1 . Noise create technique( spot, Sweep, Barrage)
2. Repeated signals technique
Electronic Counter-Counter Measure(ECCM) or electronic
protection(EP)
•EP Is also known as an electronic protective measure or electronic
counter-counter measure to use protect against an enemy Electronic
attack
•The effectiveness of electronic protection (EP) level is the ability
to counter an electronic attack (EA).
•Flare are often used to distract infrared homing missile to miss
their targets
•Other example of EP include spread spectrum technique
•defensive EA actions (jamming) and EP (defeating jamming)
both protect personnel, facilities, capabilities, and equipment,
EP protects from theeffectsof EA
Electronic support Measure
•Electronic support measure is a subdivision of EW involves an
action taken by an operational commander Or Operator to Detect ,
identify, locate and localise source of intended and unintended
radiation or electromagnetic energy.
•This is referred as simply reconnaissanceand although today more
common term are Intelligence, Surveillance.
•The purpose Is to provide immediate recognition, prioritization and
targeting of the threats to battlefield commander .
•SINGAL INTELLIGENCE-A discipline overlapping and identification
intercepted transmission for source such as radio communication
,mobile phones , radars , microwave communication .
•It’s use Concept of frequencybandwidth ,modulation and
polarization .
History of electronic warfare
•The History of electronic warfare goes back to at least the beginning of the
20
th
century .
•The earliest documents consider of EW was during the Russio-Japanese
war 1902-1905. The Japanese has located the Russian Baltic fleet in
Tsushima strait and was communicating the fleet location by ‘Warless’
•The Russian navy lost al it’s battleship and most of cruiser and destroyer.
•During WW-1,Britainand Germany are use electronic warfare
•DuringWW-2, the Allies and Axis power both extensively used EW.
•Winston Churchill referred to as the Battle of Beams .
•As time progress and battlefield communication and radar technology
improved so did electronic warfare played a major role in many military
operation during Vietnam War
•Another example in 2007,an Israeliattack on an suspectedSyrian nuclear
site during operation “Outside the Box”used EW system to disrupt
Syrian air defence while Israeli Jets crossed much of Syrian air and bombed
their targets and returned to Israel
•Israeli electronic warfare system deactivated all the Syrian air defence
system for the entire period of raid
•In December 2010 , the Russian army received their first land-based army
operated multifunctional EW system
Electronic Warfare (EW) Devices in India
•DRDOdeveloped the Defence Avionics Research Establishment (DARE). It is an EW Suite consisting of Radar
Warning and Jammer
•The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has successfully tested advanced electronic
warfare (EW) suite on the Tejas-PV1, a Light combat aircraft of the Indian Air force
•.Electronic Warfare System for Navy‘Sangraha’
•Under it,five different types of indigenous EW systems have been envisaged:
1.KITE
2.EAGLE
3.HOMI ESM
4.PORPOISE ESM
5.EW suite ELLORA
•Electronic Warfare System for Army‘Samyukta’
•It is a joint electronic warfare programme between DRDO and the Indian Army.
•The system is configured on 145 vehicles for deployment in an area of 100 km by 70 km for
Surveillance, Interception, Direction Finding & Jamming of various Communication & Radar
Signals.
Impact Of Electronic Warfare IN BATTLEFIELD
•Expansion of battle space
•Creation of transparent battlefield
•Decisions cycle dominance
•All terrain Capability
•Impact of decision making
Way Forward
•Provide EW Capability to all
•Modernization of existing EW system
•Use of EW as force multiplayer
•Expandable of jammers
•Aerostats & UAV Based interceptor system
•GPS jammer
