2. Introduction Elephants are the world’s largest animals living on the Earth at present. The roots of the word elephant in Latin divided into 2 words. One is “Ele” which means arch and other is “Phant” which means huge. Elephants are the most adaptable animals in the world.

3. Mammalia(class) About 80 million years ago the genetic lineage of elephant split from primates. The tree shrew is our considered as our near common ancestor. The first known member of the elephant was Moeritherium. This was great great ancestor of our modern elephant. This was about size of a pig. Moeritherium appeared on the Earth during a period of 55 million years ago.

4. Proboscidea(order) The first Proboscideans that looked like an elephant appeared about 35 million years ago. Tis is also called Palaeomastodon. This was about a size of a cow. Moeritheriums were the roots from which proboscideans evolved. The trend in the evolution of proboscidea had generally been longer limb bones and larger skulls and teeth.
