Definition Elixir it is liquid dosage form. It is a HYDRO ALCOHOLIC product. It is taken by oral route for sedation & hypontic allergy disorder. It is also contaion antibiotic. It is highly stable than syrup. Example Chloral hydrate elixir, Piperazine elixir, Phenobarbitone elixir.

COMPONENTS: Vehicles Medicaments Sweeting agent Preservative Colouring agent Flavouring agent

VEHICLE: Alcohol Water Glycerine Sorbital Propylene glycol Syrup

MEDICAMENTS: Antibiotics Antihistamine Barbiturate Some of the potentive drug as DIGOXIN.

PRESERVATIVE: Chloroform (1:1) it is used in the form of double strength Alcohol concentrated.

SWEETING AGENT: Glycerol Sorbital Propylene glycol Sodium saccharin Saccharin helpful in concealing the bitterness of some antibiotics Example: Neomycin

COLOURING AGENT: Amaranth ( magenta red ). Compound tartrazine ( saffron ). Green S and Tartrazine ( green ). Amaranth example : paracetamol . Compound tartrazine example : ephedrine,isoniazid , phenobarbitone . Green S and tartrazine example : piperazine,citrate .

FLAVOURING AGENT: Fruit flavour Eg : Black currant syrup Concentrated raspberry juice Lemon spirit Orange spirit

uses: Sedation Hypnotic and in some allergic disorder.
