EMBEDDED CLAUSES Is a clause (a group of words that includes a subject and a verb) that is within a main clause or matrix clause , usually marked by commas (but not always). It is an information related to the sentence topic, it is put into the beginning, middle, and end of the sentences to give the reader more information and enhance sentence.

Usually introduced by markers that, when, which, who etc… However there's instances when a marker does not precede an embedded clause. Such in case of gerunds ( e.g swimming, eating etc…) It is reliant on the main clause so it does not make sense on its own.

Examples: My bike , which is very old , is broken. main clause embedded clause main clause ( matrix clause)

Identify the embedded clause in the following sentences. Manila Bay presents a magnificent sunset experience that will last a lifetime. The place is often crowded in the early morning and late afternoon when people try to get glimpse of its world famous sunrise and sunset. Photographers take a picture of people sitting or walking along the bay area. Being among now the popular sightseeing destination, it is among the top 5 tourist spots in Manila-Philippines.

Group Activity: Bingo Game The woman had no money left. Some men are not good at sports. The town stood at the cliff top. The book was well written. The chef was given the sack from the restaurant. Can you complete me?

1. The child was crying in the supermarket. 2. The airplane was landing at the airport. 3. The people queued to buy a bargain. Can you put the embedded clauses? Which was full of passengers Who were pushing and shoving Who was lost

Direction: Answer comprehensively. I . Copy and underline the embedded clauses The boy who was usually seven could play the piano. The beach, which was very crowded, was hotter than ever.

I. Copy and put commas on the sentences. 3. The bus which was empty speed down the street. 4. The loaf of bread which he bought last week was moody. 5. The singer who was in the stage sang to the audience.

III. Make these sentences more interesting by adding an embedded clause on it. 6. The music gave me a headache. 7. The dog run towards me. 8. The rainbow stretched across the cloudy sky. 9. The young girl skipped happily to the woods. 10. The nurse gave me a shot.

IV. Write five sentences of your own with an embedded clause. Think simple sentences first and then add a bit more information

Assignment Answer exercise 2.3 in your module, write it in a whole sheet of paper. Pass next meeting.
