Introduction: Emergency and disaster management is a crucial aspect of healthcare preparedness. Nurses play a pivotal role in managing emergencies and disasters, both within healthcare facilities and in the community.

Emergency - It is defined as any unforeseen situation which requires immediate attention it may produce apprehension amongst the victim & also leave the psychological impact on them.

Factors Determining the efficacy of ER services PROMPTNESS OF ATTENTION - 1st aid should be ready at the site of ER

GOOD COMMUNICATION SYSTEM - Ensure proper communication inside and outside hospital

LOCATION & ER DEPARTMENT - ER department should be located properly in a hospital for easy access and to avoid time wastage

ADEQUATE INFRASTRUCTURE - There should be adequate equipment with Triage room, examination room, resuscitation room etc.

AMBULANCE SERVICE 🚑 24×7 🚑 should be available

EFFICIENT AND ADEQUATE STAFF- To deal with ER situations there must be well trained staff.

ADEQUACY OF EQUIPMENTS- Equipments must be available in adequate amount & drugs must be kept in extra stock.

DISASTER - According to WHO : Disaster is defined as situation of unforeseen, serious & immediate threat to public health and disruption of human ecology.

Characteristics of Disaster - A. Disaster leads to loss of life and property. B. It is associated with mass panic & usually large scale movement of population which disrupts normal social life. C. Disaster leads to raise in Morbidity, Mortality & Disability. D. It leads to unplanned expenditure & it affects countries economy.

Phases of ER/Disaster -

PREPAREDNESS- Activities prior to Disaster. Eg. Prepardness plan, ER training, Warning system. RESPONSE - Activities during a Disaster. Eg.Public warning system, ER operations, Search & rescue. RECOVERY - Activities following a disaster. Eg. Temporary housing, claims & Grants, long-term medical care & counseling MITIGATION - Activities that reduce the effect of disaster. Eg. Building codes, zoning, Public education.

PRINCIPLES OF ER/DISASTER MANAGEMENT: ER Mx Must be- COMPREHENSIVE - ER managers take into account ( all hazards, all phases, all stakeholders & all impact relevant to Disaster) Progressive - ER managers take preventive & preparatory measures to build (disaster - resistant & disaster resilent) community

RISK DRIVEN- ER managers use risk Mx principles (Hazard identification, risk analysis, impact analysis) in assigning priorities & resources. INTEGRATED- ER Managers ensure unity of efforts among (all level of govt. & all elements of community ) COLLABORATIVE - ER managers create sincere relationship among individuals & Organisation (to encourage trust and communication) Co-ordinated - ER managers synchronise the activities of all relevant stakeholders to achieve a common purpose .

FLEXIBLE - ER managers use creative & innovative approach in solving disaster challenges. PROFESSIONAL - ER managers value a science and knowledge based approach; based on education, training, experience & continuous practice.

TYPES OF DISASTER: INTERNAL: unforeseen situation limited to the hospital facility cam cause huge damage to human & property. Eg-Fire accidents, Explosions

EXTERNAL- Unforeseen situation hospitals may or may not be affected but is a critical part of larger response. Eg. Earthquake, flood, terrorism, etc

MAJOR ROLE OF NURSE IN DISASTER: 1.Define Health needs of affected group. 2.Establish priorities & objectives. 3.Identify Actual & potential public health problems. 4.Determine Resources needed to respond to the needs identified . 5. collaborates with others(govt.& non govt. Organization) 6.Maintain a unified chain of command.

CONCLUSION Disaster Mx is a collaborative & co-ordinated effort. Everyone must take an active part in disaster Mx to reduce the risk of human life
