foundinahospitalorotherprimarycare
center.
Duetotheunplannednatureofpatient
attendance,thedepartmentmustprovide
initialtreatmentforabroadspectrumof
illnessesandinjuries,someofwhichmay
belife-threateningandrequireimmediate
attention.

hospitalsoperate24hoursaday,
althoughstaffinglevelsmaybevariedin

History
Thefirstspecializedtraumacarecenterin
theworldwasopenedin1911intheUnited
StatesattheUniversityofLouisvilleHospital
inLouisville,Kentucky,andwasdeveloped
bysurgeonArnoldGriswoldduringthe
1930s.Griswoldalsoequippedpoliceandfire
vehicleswithmedicalsuppliesandtrained
officerstogiveemergencycare.
