INTRODUCTION Absenteeism is a habitual pattern of absence from a duty or an obligation. It is an unauthorised, unexplained, avoidable and willful absence from work. The magnitude of absenteeism is a universal fact and it differs from industry to industry, place to place, occupation to occupation.
TYPES OF ABSENTEEISM Sporadic Absenteeism :- If an employee is often irregular to his duties for trivial reasons, this can be considered as sporadic absenteeism. Sporadic absentee tends to be absent for his duties frequently and does not show any interest in performing his duty. Long Absenteeism :- If an employee absents for 10 days or more than 10 days, it can be considered as long absenteeism.
CAUSES OF ABSENTEEISM Key causes of absenteeism in the workplace include: Burnout and Stress Illness and Injuries Negative work environment Poor salary and benefits Partial shifts
EFFECTS OF ABSENTEEISM Loss of earnings for employer and employee Decrease in productivity Increase in financial costs Hiring and training replacement workers Low profitability
STRATEGIES TO REDUCE ABSENTEEISM Proper company policies, management support and direction Healthy supervisor-subordinate interaction Regular performance appraisal Incentive/Reward schemes to motivate employees Disciplinary measures
CONCLUSION Employee absenteeism is a major issue for an organisation . Stress, inadequate reward system, poor pay, and overtime are the primary causes of absenteeism. Good working conditions and leave facilities can help reduce absenteeism. An effective attendance record-keeping system, consultation, and open communication by management can create a healthy working environment. This would reduce grievances and increase employee satisfaction.
