Writing Skills

What is “describing data”?
Data comes in many forms. Some can be found in charts and diagrams, while
others are presented in reports and articles.
The skill of ‘describing data’ involves extracting and analyzing information from
charts and diagrams and then summarizing it in reports and articles.

Data-based Article Elements
There are different ways to organize your article on data from a specific chart or
diagram but generally, the good ones are organized in 5 paragraphs:
1.Outlining the issue the article and the data is about
2.Explaining what the chart (diagram) is about
3.Stating the main conclusion you (the writer) can draw from the data
4.Interpreting the data in more detail
5.Adding extra information not shown in the data (new relevant info)

Phrases for Data-based Articles
These phrases, each with its own meaning, can introduce the data and related
comments.
There’s a/an … (noticeable) increase
(obvious) change
(slight/significant) decrease
The number(s)/size … has/have increased (slightly/noticeably)
hasn’t/haven’t decreased significantly

1.People playing tennis: 2014 = 18%; now = 22%
○The number of people playing tennis has increased slightly.
2.Number of football (soccer) teams: 1 year ago = 53; now = 39
○The number of football teams has decreased significantly.
3.Gym memberships: 2014 = 21%; now = 33%
○Gym memberships have increased noticeably.
4.Number of volleyball teams: 2 years ago = 26; now = 23
○There has been a slight decrease in the number of volleyball teams.
