Contextualized Online Search
and Research Skills

LEARNING COMPETENCY:
•Use the Internet as a tool for
credible research and information
gathering to best achieve the
specific class objectives or address
situational challenges.

Have you ever experienced
searching the Internet for
certain information where the
search engine returned a
different result?

•Have you google search the word/s “Bamboo” and “Bamboo Filipino
Artist”
•Do you think you will get the same results?
Bamboo
Bamboo Filipino Artist

RESEARCH
•the systematic investigation into and
study of materials and sources in order
to establish facts and reach new
conclusions. Dictionary Definitions fromOxford Language

How do you able to
search information in
the internet?

•Online Search –is the process
of interactively searching and
retrieving requested
information via computer
database that are online or by
using the Internet

Search Engines
•is a program that helps you find web
pages about certain topics or locate
specific web pages.

List of the 10 best
search engines in 2020, ranked by popularity:
•1. Google 6. DuckDuckGo
•2. Bing 7. Ask.com
•3. Yahoo 8. Ecosia
•4. Baidu 9. Aol.com
•5. Yandex 10. Internet Archive

1. Google.
•Is the best search engine
worldwide. What made
google the most popular
and trusted search engine
is the quality of its search
results. Google is using
sophisticated algorithms
to present the most
accurate results to the
users.

2. Bing originated from Microsoft’s previous
search engine (MSN Search, Windows Live Search ,
Live Search) Bings

3. Yahoo. Is one of the most popular email
providers and its web search holds third place.

CONTEXTUALIZED ONLINE SEARCH
•Contextualized search on the Internet is
different from the traditional way of
getting information that returns a list of
papers or documents relevant to the
request of the user

in conducting an online research

1. Have a question in mind
•Focuson a question you
want to be answered. If it is
a series of questions, start
with one. Never search
everything on one go. Do it
one at a time

2. Narrow it down
•. Be specific. Search engines like Google, Bing, or
Yahoo use several filters to determine the most
appropriate result for you.
•These search engines use your previous search
history and your geographical location and send
you the result which is more related to you.

What precautionary measures should
you observe when you are logged-in in a
public wifi?

These are some ways to help you narrow your
results to find exactly what you’re looking for.

Use quotation marks to find exact
phrases or names . Put a word inside
quotes.
Example “tallest buildings”

AND (+ in Google)
•Example: Peanut Butter +and Jam

•What precautionary measures should you
observe when you are logged-in in a public
wifi?
•Use : precautionary measure AND observe AND
public computer

OR
Example : marathon OR race

NOT (-in Google)
Example : jaguar speed -car

Search a specific site. If you’re looking for specific
topic for a particular website, you can use siteto
limit your research to that site.
•Example : youtube.com or .gov

Search for a specific fil type. If you know that
you’re searching for a particular type of file use
filetypeto narrow your search results to a certain
type of file.
•Example : filetype.ppt

Search for a definition. If you’re looking for a
definition or term you can use define
•Example. define communication

Search for a time. If you’re searching for a
specific time in a country
•Example. time <country>

Search for a Social Media. Put @ in front to
search social media
•Example . @twitter

3. Advanced Search.
•The best way to filter information you
get from search engines is by using the
advanced search. This will allow you to
filter out information you do not need.

Once you are done you can now filter your search results

4. Look for a credible source.
•Some wikis, though filled with
updated information are not
credible sources. This is because
anyone can edit its content.

1. What is the domain type of the website? If it is a
personal website, then you should further evaluate
the website.
2. Who wrote the article? Check if the author’s
credentials or affiliations are listed so you can tell
whether or not the author is qualified to write the
topic. Check also the publisher of the article if it is a
reliable publisher. Make sure that the author
provides e-mail or a contact address/phone number

3. What is the purpose of the document and why was it
produced? It is also important to check the document’s
purpose and why it was produced.
The document should provide accurate information and
must be objective in presenting it. Some websites produce
documents for the purpose of motivating users to buy
products.
If this is the case, information might be biased. However,
bias is not necessarily bad but you need to investigate the
author or connections

4. When was the document published and
updated? The document should be regularly
updated. As to the freshness of the date, it
depends on the information needed.
For some topics you want current information.
For others, you want information near the time it
became known. The links should also be up-to-
date. There should be no dead links.

Example of credible sources
•scientific journals,
•news and magazine websites
•online encyclopedias
•scholarly databases

•check the URL of a website if it
ends with .org, .gov, and .edu.
•validate if the information is
correct is to have multiple
sources of information.

5. Give credit. If you are going to used the
information from a source for education
purposes, give credit to the original author of
the page or information. Use the format below
❖Name of the person or organization (author)
❖Title of the homepage in italics (URL).
❖Date last seen

•Example.
•Lapiz, Adrian Harold L. “Oleander's Fun
Facts about Bananas.”
http://oleander.penz.com/randome/banana.ht
mViewed on September 7, 2015.

evaluating website credibility?

Intellectual Property
-An idea or invention, a form of
literary work, or a research, you
have the right as to how it
should be used by others.

▪is a legal means of protecting an author's work.
▪It is a type of intellectual property that provides
exclusive publication, distribution, and usage
rights for the author.
•This means whatever content the author created cannot be used or published by
anyone else without the consent of the author. The length of copyright protection
may vary from country to country, but it usually lasts for the life of the author plus
50 to 100 years.

Many different types of content can be protected by
copyright.
oExamples include books, poems, plays, songs,
films, and artwork.
oIn modern times, copyright protection has
been extended to websitesand other online
content..

•An act prescribing the intellectual
property code and establishing
the Intellectual Property Office,
providing for its powers and
functions, and other purposes

•The copyright law includes
your rights over your work, and
anyone who uses it without
your consent is punishable by
law..

So how do you obtain copyright
protection?
oCopyright protection is automatic. This means whenever you
publish original content, it is automatically protected by
copyright law.
oHowever, if you want others to know your content is
copyright protected, you can post the copyright logo (©) next
to your name on any Web pagesthat include your original
content. You may also want to include the years you have
owned the content. Below is an example of a copyright line.
•Copyright © 2007-2009 [your name].

COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT

❑is a violation of an individual or organization's
copyright.
❑It describes the unauthorized use of
copyrighted material, such as text, photos,
videos, music, software, and other original
content.
❑In the computer industry, copyright violations
often refer to software programs and websites.

Patents
•A patent grants property rightson an invention,
allowing the patent holder to exclude others from
making, selling, or using the invention. Inventions
allow many businesses to be successful because
they develop new or better processes or products
that offer competitive advantage on the
marketplace

Trademarks
ois a word, phrase, symbol, or design that distinguishes
the source of products (trademarks) or services (service
marks) of one business from its competitors. In order to
qualify for patent protection, the mark must be
distinctive.
oFor example, the Nike "swoosh" design identifies
athletic footwaremade by Nike.

Trade Secrets
•is a formula, process, device, or other business
information that companies keep private to
give them a business advantage over their
competitors. Examples of trade secrets include:
oSoda formulas
oCustomer lists
oSurvey results
oComputer algorithms

Tips that could help
to avoid Infringement

❑Understand.Copyright protects
literary works, photographs,
paintings, films, music (and lyrics),
choreography, and sculptures, but
generally does NOT protect
underlying ideas and facts.

❑Be responsible. Even if a
material does not say that it is
copyrighted, it is not a valid
defense against copyright.
oBe responsible enough to know if
something has a copyright

❑Be creative.Ask yourself whether what
you are making is something that came
from you or something made from
somebody else’s creativity. It is
important to add your own creative
genius in everything that will credited
to you.

❑Know the law. The Philippines, copyrights
only last a lifetime (of the author) plus 50
years.
oThere are provisions for “fair use” which mean that an
intellectual property maybe used without a consent as
long as it is used for commentaries, criticisms, search
engines, parodies, news reports, research, library
archiving, teaching and education.

Another misconception is that fanfiction is not a
copyright infringement. In reality,
it is, and some copyright holders ignore them, but they
can opt to use their rights.
•Fair Use -means that an
intellectual property
may be used without
consent if it is used in
commentaries,
criticisms, search
engines, parodies, news
reports, research, library
archiving,
•teaching and in
education.
