TRENDS IN INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY The growth in information and communications technology is enormous. Many different technologies are introduced to the world, as time passes by. In fact, these technologies make life more comfortable and enjoyable.

Convergent Technologies Refers to the meeting of different elements to make up a whole. In the context of ICT, it can be viewed as technological convergence. Technological convergence -is a theoretical integration where different technologies can be linked to each other. It means that integrated technology can be detached from the main technology.

Let us take smartphone as example. Generally, the smartphones that we know today are examples of convergent technology. In a sense that this piece of technology has radio, television, scanners, and other functional parts that were only integrated in the past.

Mobile Technologies Are the most readily known convergent technology used by nontechnical people . Smartphones , as internet devices, are currently using 4G technology, however; recently 5G network that is far advanced is now being introduced to different locations. Smartphones from different manufacturing companies use different operating system such as Ios , Android , BlackBerry OS , Windows Phone OS , WebOS , Symbian , and Windows Mobile .

ONLINE PLATFORMS AND SITES

Online platform is a specially developed platform using Internet technology. Online platforms have revolutionized access to any information.

Presentation or Visualization Platform Allows you to present and share presentations, infographics and videos with other people. It is used to communicate information clearly and efficiently.

Cloud Computing Platform is also called as “The cloud.” Instead of using your computer’s hard drive, you store and access your data and programs over the Internet.

File Management Platform is used for the storing , naming , sorting , and handling of computer files. Allows you to convert and manage files without download in the software tool.

Mapping Platform is a transformation taking the points of one space into the points of the same or another space. Uses GPS to detect location and used for navigation .

Social Media Platforms The process of connecting people and bringing relevant and pertinent information to people across the globe. a computer-mediated tools that allow large group of people to create , share or exchange information , interest and the information shared can be in the form of ideas, pictures, videos or anything that you want to create and share to virtual communities

Social Networks These sites allow you to connect with other people with the same interests or background. Facebook , LinkedIn , and Twitter are the most popular examples of social networking sites. These sites allow the creation of personal accounts that will be used to connect with people for different purpose.

Bookmarking Sites It is important to use a platform to search, manage, organize, and store web pages that a person wants to revisit or share with others. Pinterest and Delicious are well-known bookmarking sites.

Pinterest started in 2010 with now over 70 million users. It allows the users to pin content on their boards, and it also allows them to re-pin other user’s content. Delicious , on the other hand, was launched in 2003 which allows its users to create their own stacks or create them with other users.

Social News These are sites that permit the users to submit news articles, stories, videos, and photographs that are worth sharing to their expected subscribers. The example of these sites are Digg and Propeller . Digg - is a social news site that covers topic on technology, entertainment, and general news. Propeller – is another site that covers topics on technology, politics, and more. YCombinator Hacker News - is a good choice for entrepreneurship topics.

Media Sharing These are sites that allow you to upload and share media content like images, music, and video. Media sharing sites can be specific for video sharing, photo sharing, slide sharing, social bookmarking, and gaming.

Microblogging These are online broadcast mediums that allow users to post and exchange short contents that may include texts, graphics, audios, and videos. Twitter and Tumblr are examples of microblogging media.

Blogs and Forums These are websites that allow users to post their content. Other users can comment on the said topic.

Blog Allow one to post his or her content. The ability to comment on the content is set by the blogger. Forums Contain question and answer discussion board. Considered meaningful, as they bring people of similar interests together to discuss topics and issues.

Assertive Media Particularly Assistive technology , are devices that are adaptive, assistive and rehabilitative to the elderly and people with special needs . These technologies can be in various forms such as mobility aid , hearing aids , or physical modifications in the environment.
