What are the Properties of Matter?
Table of contents 01. Matter 02. Properties 03. Changes in matter 04. Assessment
01. Matter
What is matter? Matter is that which can be perceived through the senses , specifically everything that is observable and measurable . It is defined as everything that has mass and occupies a place in space
What are mass and space? Mass Mass is the amount of matter that the body has, which can be measured using scales Kilograms Grams Milligrams Etc. Space Space is the volume occupied by matter or a body Cubic meters (m3) Liters
Where can we find matter? We can find matter on Earth in three different forms: Liquid Gaseous Solid The shape of liquid materials depends on the container they are located in Gaseous materials have no shape or volume. We can find them in any space that is available within a certain place Solid materials are those that have a weight and volume that do not change
02. Properties
General and specific properties The general properties of matter are common characteristics that are found in all bodies. They allow us to identify common properties in all the substances that make up matter Some general properties of matter are Mass Volume Temperature
Temperature Temperature is a general property of matter since all bodies or objects have a certain temperature Temperature ≠ Heat Temperature is a property of matter
V olume and mass Volume Volume is the space occupied by matter or a body Mass Mass tells us the amount of matter that is present . The mass does not change, but the weight depends on where the body of matter is
General and specific properties The specific properties of matter are the s pecific characteristics of each of the substances that make up matter Chemistry Physics Oxidation Alkalinity Combustion Etc. Boiling point Density Electric conductivity Etc.
D ensity Density is the amount of matter that we can observe in a material. It establishes the type of substance, but the proximity of the particles must also be taken into account in order to determine how dense the materials in question are
03. Changes in matter
Physical and chemical changes Physical changes Physical changes are those that produce a change in the form of matter but not in its composition ; they are reversible Chemical changes Chemical changes are those that produce a modification in the change of substances that make up matter, they are irreversible
04. Assessment
Assessment Are the following statements true (t) or false (F)? The properties of matter allow the states of matter to be modified T F Justify or expand on the answer Mass can be measured in cubic meters or liters T F Justify or expand on the answer The general properties of matter are common characteristics found in all bodies T F Justify or expand on the answer
Answer correctly Temperature and volume are two specific properties T F Justify or expand on the answer The physical changes of matter are irreversible T F Justify or expand on the answer Chemical changes in matter produce changes in the substances that make up matter T F Justify or expand on the answer The volume is not changed T F Justify or expand on the answer
