About This Presentation

Talks about importance of reading stamina and reading volume in children's reading.

Slide Content

Robbie, a fifth grader, loves to read and always has a reading book on his desk. If the book’s close by, he can read it after finishing class work.  Frequently, Robbie’s book travels home with him when he’s “into it and can’t stop reading.” Most days, Robbie reads more than one hour during independent reading at school and at home. It’s no surprise that Robbie scores high in reading comprehension and vocabulary on annual state tests. Extensive reading develops background knowledge, helps children build on their vocabulary, develops deep conceptual understanding of a wide variety of topics, improves fluency & comprehension and heightens motivation. READING VOLUME

What is reading volume? The amount and frequency with which one reads is one’s reading volume. So the time you spend reading and the number of books you read, together account for reading volume. It has profound implications for development of a wide variety of cognitive capabilities encompassing verbal ability and general knowledge. READING VOLUME

READING VOLUME Why is reading volume important? Avid voluminous reading is the most reliable path to develop proficient readers, indeed there is no other way to become a proficient reader. No matter what we’re trying to get proficient at- cricket, tennis, basketball, we have to practice for many, many hours. No surprise then that students who read extensively and intensively at home and at school become proficient readers.

READING VOLUME Why is reading volume important? Avid readers: Expand their vocabularies – Learn thousands of new words incidentally through reading. Children with robust vocabularies are successful readers and learners. Deepen and broaden their background knowledge & expand their capacity to comprehend - Read more, learn more and know more and thereby comprehend more with every book they read. Become fluent readers – Learn the music of language.

READING VOLUME Develop awareness of genres & text structures Absorb critical information about how to write – Every time a child opens a book, he receives a lesson in how to structure a sentence, a paragraph or whole texts; how to begin a piece and how to end it. Know themselves as readers - Build rich reading lives; talk about authors, themes & genres. They understand the joy of reading deeply and profoundly. Become confident learners with a growth mindset – They become capable learners as they are supported by a wide ranging knowledge that reading makes possible.

READING VOLUME Effective reading programs include time for independent reading of a wide variety of books across genres but reading volume is especially supported by reading books in series. Children will r ead m ore if they r ead a book s eries If a child enjoys and finishes the first book of a series, he won’t have to think twice about what he will read next. He just grabs the next book in the series he is reading! A good series helps to keep the momentum going because of its familiarity and ease of choice. In writing a series, an author has the opportunity to create more in-depth plots and to deepen the reader’s relationship with the main characters. Readers have an opportunity to connect more with the character’s personality, which will also encourage them to read more. Coming to the end of a book where you dearly love the characters is hard because you’re not ready to part ways. This is where reading series helps. Reading Series

Develops Reading Fluency Reading fluency refers to the ability to read with speed, accuracy, and proper expression. Reading fluency has a close connection to comprehension because if children are not reading at a fluent rate, it is difficult to understand the story. When children choose to read a book series, which are often predictable and fairly easy to follow, their fluency rate will grow. Improves comprehension Studies show an improvement in comprehension when children read a book series. As a child becomes familiar with an author’s style, he is able to recognize patterns in their writing. This helps him to have a better understanding of story elements like plot, characters, dialogue, as well as text structure.   READING VOLUME Reading Series

Share a common i nterest w ith friends Reading books provides a common interest with friends and further reading. They practice having conversations and question one another about their opinions on books. This challenges their thinking and further enhances their comprehension.  READING VOLUME Reading Series
