ENDANDERED SPECIES
Species under the risk of extension.
Example:
Rucervus eldii
◦Species extension effects ecosystem and therefore
conservation is must.
◦In order to conserve endangered species two strategies
can be taken up.
In-situ Conservation
Ex-situ Conservation
IN-SITU Conservation
Method
•Conservation within the habitat.
•The most appropriate way of conserving diversity.
•Indian National Strategy for conservation of diversity.

Protected Areas
1. Hotspot Areas
2. National Parks
3. Sanctuary
4. Biosphere Reserved
Hotspot Areas
High endemism.
•Approximately 1500 vascular plants.
•70 percent exploitation.
•Norman Myers in 1984 identified 10 Hotspot.
•34 Hotspot in the world and 3 Hotspot in India.
The Himalayas
The Western Ghat and Srilanka.
The Indo-Burma Biodiversity.
National Parks
Restricted Area designed to preserved the
rare species and reserved for educational
and scientific research.
Some of the National Parks of India are
given below:
Keibul Lamjao National Park , Manipur.
Kaziranga National Park, Assam.
Jim Corbett National Park, Uttaranchal.
Sanctuary
Protected area formed by the State and
Central Government.
◦Killing, Hunting, Poaching is prohibited.
◦In India, there are 490 sanctuary till 2000.
◦Reserved for research only.
Example: Kedarnath (Uttar Pradesh),
Keladevi (Rajasthan),
Askot (Uttarakhand),
Pulicat(Andhra Pradesh).
Biosphere Reserved
Area containing a wild life preserved bordered by
buffer zone, establish a way of integrating habitat
conservation with the interest of the local
community.
Functions:
◦Conservation
◦Development.
◦Logistic.
EX-SITU CONSERVATION
Conservation of plant and animals outside their
natural habitat.
Collection and conservation of species in specific
location.
◦Example: Zoological Garden, Botanical Garden,
Gene Bank, Seed Bank, Captive Breeding etc
Sphenodon (extinct in wild, surviving under
captivity in New Zealand.
