About This Presentation

It is about the endocrine system.

Slide Content

What is the
endocrine
system?
The endocrine system is made up of glands and the
hormones they secrete.
Theendocrine systemis a series of glands that
produce and secrete hormonesthat the body uses
for a wide range offunctions.

What is the endocrine system?
Hormone: A Chemical messenger which targets
a specific group of cells, in order to cause that
group of cells do some activity or stop doing an
activity

Hormones…
A hormone is a chemical transmitter. It is released
in small amounts from glands, and is
transported in the bloodstream to target organs or
other cells.

EndocrineGlands are
called ductless glands
•Release hormones directly
into the bloodstream
•Blood transports hormones
throughout the body
•Each hormone acts on only
a certain kind of tissue called
its target tissue

Human Endocrine Glands
•Pituitary
•Thyroid
•Adrenal
•Thymus
•Pancreas
•Testes and Ovaries

pituitary gland
•Pituitarygland is a round organ about the size of
a pea ,located behind the nose at the base of the
brain
•Secretes 9 different hormones, which affect many
different areas of the body, including:
•Growth
•Blood pressure
•Regulation of Pregnancy
•Breast milk production
•Sex organ functions in both men and women
•Thyroid gland function
•Metabolism
•Water regulation in the body (kidneys)
•Temperature regulation

A Few Pituitary Hormones
Hormone Function
Growth Hormone (GH) To increase body size during
childhood and adolescence; to
maintain body size during adulthood
Thyroid Stimulating Hormone
(TSH)
To stimulate the thyroid to produce
thyroxin
Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) Regulate puberty, development,
and reproductive processes
Luteinizing Hormone (LH)
Stimulates the production of
estrogen and testosterone

Growth Hormone
•Over secretion of growth hormone:
–Gigantismin childhood and acromegaly in adults
(bones of face, hands and feet enlarge)
•Under secretion of growth hormone:
–Dwarfismin childhood

Secretions of the thyroid gland…
•Located in the neck
•Releases many hormones
•Function is to control the
speed of food turning into
energy ( metabolism)

Secretions of the thyroid gland…

Disorders of the Thyroid Glands

The thymus gland has
two lobes, and is
found between the
lungs. It secretes
thymosin. This is
necessary for the
Thymus’ normal
production and
maturation of T cells
for the immune
system.
Thymus Gland

The adrenal glands…
The triangular-
shaped adrenal
glands are
located on the
top of each
kidney. The
inside is called
the medulla and
the outside layer
is called the
cortex.

Secretions from the
adrenal cortex…
Hormone Cortisol:
regulates carbohydrate,
protein, and fat metabolism;
helps the body cope during
times of stress

Secretions
from the
adrenal
medulla…
Hormone: Adrenalin.
It increases blood pressure, and increases heart
rate

Adrenal
•Under secretion of adrenaline results in
the inabilityto deal with stress

Pancreas
•Hormones secreted
are insulin and
glucagon
•Insulin decreases the
blood sugar.
•Glucagon promotes
conversion of
glycogen to glucose

Secretions of the ovaries…
The ovaries produce
several estrogen hormones
and progesterone. These
hormones prepare the
uterus for pregnancy,
promote the development
of mammary glands, and
develop secondary sex
characteristics in the
female.
Estrogen is essential for the growth, development,
and maintenance of female sex organs.

The testes produce
the male sex
hormone called
testosterone. It is
essential for normal
growth and
development of the
male sex organs..
Secretions of the testes…
