Persuasive Techniques
Introduction There are lots of ways to manipulate the opinion and decisions of an individual and groups to support a particular cause or belief. Over the centuries, people in different fields such as politics, businesses and advertisements try to reach out and influence others by using different Propaganda Techniques .
PROPAGANDA Propaganda is designed to persuade. Its purpose is to influence and manipulate your opinions, emotions, attitudes or behavior. It uses communication techniques that create an emotional appeal for you to accept a particular belief or opinion, to adopt a certain behavior or to perform a particular action. Moreover, propaganda and its different types have been used throughout history to manipulate one’s thinking to buy certain products, vote a certain way, or to change one's thinking about religious or civil issues.
TYPES OF PROPAGANDA Bandwagon- This technique uses the idea of “Everybody's in favor of it; join the crowd.” It is persuading people by telling them that others are doing the same thing. Example: An advertisement saying that “everybody” is now using a specific brand of facemask to protect themselves from COVID-19 so you must also buy the same mask and be protected just like the others. 2. Testimonial - This technique uses famous people or authority figures to promote something . Example: Famous Filipino celebrities like Alden Richards and Maine Mendoza promoting a certain product. https://orangemagazine.ph/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/NBD8.jpg
3. Plain Folks- This technique uses a folksy approach to convince us to support someone or something. It shows normal people with ordinary looks doing ordinary activities like riding a bicycle, fishing with the family, etc. Example: A detergent commercial showing a typical Filipina mother using the brand while washing clothes. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dIjZImAyoKs
4. Transfer - when a product is sold by the name or picture of a famous person or thing but there are no words from the said person or thing. It also associates a respected person, idea or symbol with whatever is being promoted, such as picturing a well-known athlete in a breakfast cereal advertisement. Example: A poster of Manny Pacquiao wearing his championship belts being used in promoting a pain reliever. http://mannypacquiaonews.blogspot.com/2010/11/
5. Repetition - when the product’s name is repeated at least four times in the ad Example: A billboard showing the same picture and bottle of a soft drink brand. https://mediaoginformasjon2014.wordpress.com/2014/12/01/typer-propaganda-brukt-i-reklame/repetition/
6. Glittering Generalities - This technique uses important-sounding "glad words" or "good" labels, such as democratic, patriotic, amazing, beautiful, exciting and other catchy adjectives that are unsupported by facts. Sometimes, these words also form a slogan for the specific product or idea being promoted. https://propaganda.mediaeducationlab.com https://www.pinterest.ph/pin/311452130454812651/ https://outoftownblog.com
