Objectives: At the end of grade 6, learners should be able to construct meanings and communicate them using creative, appropriate and grammatically correct oral and written language.

Figures of Speech English 6 Quarter 1 Week 1

Figurative language is used when a writer describes something using comparisons that go beyond literal meaning. The words mean more than what they say on the surface. This gives the writing a fresh look at a common subject. Figurative language is not meant to be interpreted in a word by word sense. The objects that are being compared are different in enough ways so that their similarities, when pointed out, are interesting, unique and/or surprising. Figurative language is used in poetry and fiction, as well as in everyday speech.

1.Ordinary language is the language used by people in their normal conversation while literary language is the language used by writers or artists in composing literary works. 2.Ordinary language is simple to understand while literary language is difficult to understand. Examples Ordinary language Literary language _Listen to me. -Lend me your ears.

3.Ordinary language uses few figures of speech while literary language is rich in figures of speech. 4.Ordinary language has low degree of creativity and novelty while literary language has high degree of creativity and novelty. In literature, new words are created and the structure or normal word order can be broken. That is called poetic diction. So, poetic diction can also create novelty in language. 5.Ordinary language uses normal word order while in literary language deviation is possible depending on the needs(style) of the writer.
