What I Need to Know
This module was carefully designed and written with your level of
understanding and interest in mind. It is here to help develop the skill in
providing evidence to support opinion. The language and vocabulary used is
intended for you as an intermediate reader.
This module focuses on this learning competency:
Make a stand based on informed opinion .
After going through this module, you are expected to:
• Give an opinion based on knowledge (informed opinion); and
• Make a stand based on informed opinion.

What I Know
This part checks your understanding of the previous lesson.
Thus, this part comes in the form of a review. For this lesson, the
review focuses on providing evidence to support opinion.
Directions: Complete the organizer below by giving your
opinion and supporting it by providing evidence.

Lesson

Making A Stand

A belief, judgment or way of thinking about something based on
information is an informed opinion. When you are armed with evidence to
support your claim, you are confident enough to make a stand or publicly
assert your opinion. So how do we make a stand based on informed
opinion? This skill is something to be learned in this module.

What’s In
Here is a topic which you came across in the previous module. Recall
your opinion about it together with the evidence to support it. Write it inside
the box. A prompt is provided for you.

Topic: Use of Cellular Phones in Schools

Questions:
− How did you form your opinion?
− Is your opinion supported by evidence or details?
− What pieces of evidence have you shared?
− Is your opinion based on factual information or knowledge?
− Do you consider your opinion an informed opinion? Why?

Now, it is time for you to make a stand or express your position on this
topic.

Choose the column that shows your stand on the topic. As you write your
response in the column of your choice, be guided by the following questions:

− Why should pupils be allowed to use cellphones in school?
− Will cellphones help pupils learn better in school? In what ways?
− What other benefits do pupils get from using cellphones in school?

Are you in favor of using cellular phones in school? Why? Why not?

phones in school because _________

Questions:
− How did you make a stand or express your position on the issue?
− What helped you make a stand?
− Is it important to have evidence to support your stand? Why?

What’s New
A view or belief based on factual information or knowledge is an
informed opinion. This is what we need if we want to effectively make a
stand or express our position on an issue or topic. Informed opinion
guarantees that sufficient evidence backs up our claims.

8

How to make a stand based on informed opinion?
The following are the steps to effectively express your view:
1. Link your position to your goal.
Know your goal. Be sure to where you stand so everything you will say
and write will be linked to your goal.
2. Back it up with data.
Beyond linking your point to a goal, it helps to have the facts and data
to back up your position. This will appeal to those detail-oriented
people who are only persuaded by analysis and logic. Plus, you will
want to have done some of this work as part of deciding on taking
your stand.
3. Create a compelling narrative.
Just because something makes sense in your own mind doesn’t mean
it will instantly make sense to everyone else. You have to craft your
position so it’s easy for others to “get” right away.
That’s where the concept of creating a narrative or storyline comes in.
And as you put together your narrative, it helps to keep your main
listeners or readers in mind so you can tailor your message in the
most effective way.
Putting together your case in the form of a storyline will help ensure
that your point is clear in your own mind and that your logic is
faultless. It will also help you bring a greater level of emotional
connection with your audience. Finally, it will make it easier for you to
remember how to articulate your case in the best way when the time
comes.

What Is It
Taking A Stand

Directions: Read what research says about using games to educate
children. Then, write an informed opinion about it. Make a stand based on
the informed opinion you make. Be able to share your thoughts by
completing the chart.
Topic/Issue: Should games be used to teach children in school?

Benefits of Games Based Learning
In her article, “Harnessing the Power of Game Dynamics,” Kim
states that gamification is the process of game thinking and game
mechanics to engage users and solve problems. The author states
that games can help in learning because people are more:
• motivated
• engaged, and
• achieve more in games than in the real world.

Disadvantages of Game-based Learning:
• If games aren't designed correctly, it could be a disadvantage to
the learner's thinking.
• Games may be a source of distraction and waste of time.
• If teachers aren't familiar with technology (aren't tech-savvy) the
way students are, there could be a gap between teaching and
learning.

What’s More
Speak Up Your Mind!

Directions: Come up with an informed opinion by reading the text
about the advantages and disadvantages of watching television. Make a
stand by writing your thoughts. Be mindful of the rubric for rating.
What are the Advantages of Watching Television?
1. In this busy, expensive life, television is an easy and cheap source of
entertainment.
2. By watching international news, we are kept informed and up-to-date
with breaking news around the world.
Rubric for rating:
5 – The stand/position is based on informed opinion. It is clearly expressed with
no grammatical miscues.
4- – The stand/position is based on informed opinion. However, it includes at
least two to three irrelevant details with 3 to 5 grammatical miscues.
3 - The stand/position is based on informed opinion. However, it includes at
least 4 - 6 irrelevant details with 6 to 8 grammatical miscues.
2- The stand/position is based on informed opinion. However, it includes at least
7- 8 irrelevant details with 9-12 grammatical miscues.
1- The stand/position is based on informed opinion. However, it includes at least
8 irrelevant details with 13 or more grammatical miscues.
0 –The stand/position is unclear.

11

3. Some shows and channels (like PBS and Discovery) offer educational
programs that can increase our knowledge and make us more aware
of the world around us.
4. Do-it-yourself shows give us easy access to all kinds of information:
Cooking channels offer new recipes and methods, home improvement
shows introduce us to many money-saving DIY tips, and financial
advisers give advice for managing finances and investing money, for
example. Television can also be a good way to help people learn a
different language.
5. Some shows can motivate people who are interested in that field and
help them to pursue their dreams.

What Are the Disadvantages of Watching Television?
1. Sex, crime, and violence are frequently depicted on television and may
have negative effects on impressionable children (and adults!). Kids
who see violent acts are more likely to display aggressive or violent
behavior and also to believe that the world is a scary place and that
something bad is going happen to them. Ongoing studies have shown
a lasting correlation between watching violence on television and
aggression that begins in childhood and continues into adulthood.
2. Viewers sometimes imitate violent, criminal, sexual, or other risky
behavior they see on television... and end up in trouble, in jail, or in a
hospital as a result.
3. Watching too much television is not good for your health. Studies
have shown that there is a correlation between watching television
and obesity. Excessive TV watching (more than 3 hours a day) can
also contribute to sleep difficulties, behavior problems, lower grades,
and other health issues.
4. Television makes us antisocial, taking the place of family and friends.

12

5. It's a waste of time. Watching television fills the time a person might
have spent doing important, enriching things like interacting socially
with other human beings, being physically active, discovering the
outdoors, reading, using one's own imagination, or accomplishing
other things like working or doing homework or chores, or spending
time with enriching hobbies like art, music, etc.
6. There's nothing good on, anyway. With hundreds of channels
available, viewers can spend hours just flipping channels trying to
find something worthwhile.

What I Have Learned

Making a stand based on informed opinion is an
important skill. It helps us assert our view or belief confidently.

What I Can Do
Where Do You Stand?

Directions: Below is an article discussing the advantages (pro) and
disadvantages (con) of using herbal medicine. Read on. Make a stand
afterwards.

Pro: Natural medications are well, natural.
Dr. Roller shares that there are reasons to look into herbal
alternatives. “There may be fewer differences between ‘natural medicine’ and
‘pharmaceuticals’ than you think,” he says. Plants are rich in a variety of
compounds that have been used in medications for thousands of years. From
phenols to antibiotics to new emerging cancer treatments, naturally occurring
compounds are an excellent source of healing for modern medicine. Nearly 25
percent of drugs prescribed worldwide are based on active ingredients derived
from plants. In fact, of the 177 drugs approved for treating cancer, 70 percent
are based on natural products.

Con: Herbal medicines are not FDA-approved.
Just because a medication is made from natural ingredients does not
guarantee that it is safe or effective. “Herbal supplements are not approved
by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA),” says Dr. Roller, “which means
that they have not passed any safety, efficacy, or human clinical trials.”

14

Because these natural medications are not subjected to the same scrutiny as
FDA-approved medications, it is even more important to research potential
benefits or side effects, especially related to certain health issues.

Though the FDA does require that herbal supplements follow good
manufacturing procedures that ensure some level of quality, this in no way
ensures that they are safe for anyone’s use. Any supplement could have
potential side effects, and these negative consequences can increase when
taken with other over-the-counter or prescription medications. Be sure you
speak to your doctor or pharmacist about any medications you taking in
addition to the herbal supplement you are considering.

What I Can Do On My Own
Directions: Read about the advantages and disadvantages of Facebook as a
popular social media. Make your stand based on the given issue.

The Advantages of Facebook for Children
1. Digital Competence
Managing a Facebook page teaches a child how to post comments and photos,
and how to navigate the Web. Having good online social media skills will be
increasingly important as they get older.
2. Educational Development
A majority of tweens and teens use social networking to discuss school work.
Shared discussions about school assignments is one of the best reasons to
allow access to social networks.
3. Social Skills
Facebook allows kids to keep up with current friends and make new ones.
When used in the right way, social media can increase a child’s self-esteem
and help them feel less isolated.

The Disadvantages of Facebook for Children
1. Facebook is a Gateway to the Whole Internet
Children would become part of one of the Internet’s most expansive personal
data-collection and profiling platforms. Not to mention the exposure to a new
generation of highly persuasive and manipulative digital marketing practices
as well.
2. Waste of Time
You could spend hours on the social media site without realizing how much
time has gone by. Can you imagine how that would be for a curious young
child?
3. Introduction to Cyber-bullying
However much you school your child on the right way to behave online, you
cannot stop other children from posting mean comments.

16

Many parents are concerned about the negative effects that come with online
interaction but disallowing children in joining such social media is easier said
than done. In fact, with appropriate guidance and supervision, Facebook can
bring a number of advantages for kids.
