ELEMENTS OF A STORY: CHARACTER

1. discover the different types of characters; 2. identify the types of characterization During and at the end of the 60-minute discussion, students are expected to:

CHARACTER A character is a person, animal or other creatures that plays a role in a story. Writers or authors use characters to perform actions and speak dialogues.

2 MAIN TYPES OF CHARACTER ANTAGONIST VS. The main character . The primary focus of a story. The character in conflict with the main character. PROTAGONIST

VS PROTAGONIST ANTAGONIST

CHARACTERIZATION Characterization is the information the author provides you about the characters in a story. It is the act of describing characters. There are two types of characterization: DIRECT CHARACTERIZATION AND INDIRECT CHARACTERIZATION

DIRECT CHARACTERIZATION The writer tells you directly what a character is like. It is the way in which the writer reveals the personality of a character directly.

DIRECT CHARACTERIZATION EXAMPLES “Miss Alice was the strongest person I have ever met” “ Natasha is a girl with a kind and generous heart”

INDIRECT CHARACTERIZATION The writer tells you information about a character but doesn’t tell you about the character’s personality directly.

INDIRECT CHARACTERIZATION The author presents the character’s personality through: His/her physical appearance what he/she says, thinks, feels, hopes and preferences his/her actions what other characters say about him or her how other characters react to him/her. This way, you have to make your own judgment about the character.

DIRECT CHARACTERIZATION EXAMPLES “Miss Alice experienced many problems in life but she did not give up and is now very successful.” Natasha noticed that one of her classmates do not have lunch so she shared her food to him.

Direct characterization “tells” the reader. Indirect characterization “shows” the reader.

DIRECT OR INDIRECT? Jane is a cruel person . “ As Jane walked past the homeless children in the street, she glanced around her , then gave one boy a swift kick.” DIRECT INDIRECT

DIRECT OR INDIRECT? She wore a ten carat diamond necklace everywhere she went. She was rich. INDIRECT DIRECT

PRACTICE TASK: Tell whether the statement about the character is direct or indirect. Write DIRECT CHARACTERIZATION or INDIRECT CHARACTERIZATION. Joe was having fun at the party. Joe couldn't believe it was already 2 in the morning, he didn't want to leave yet. Sally is socially awkward. All Sally does when people are around is say weird things that nobody understands. The clothes that John wears are outdated. John wore bellbottoms, gold chains, platform shoes, and huge sunglasses to the homecoming dance. Dylan thought that reading was boring. No matter what he read, every time Dylan opened a book, he'd be snoring in five minutes. Dee thinks that she is better than everyone else. Whenever anyone tries to speak to Dee, she says, "You don't know me," rolls her eyes, and walks away.

Why is conflict important in a story?

Most of the time, readers become more interested in a literary piece because of the tension in the story. Readers are simply hooked in order to discover which of the characters or forces will eventually win. Conflict is a necessary element for all stories whether it is a novel, short story, mystery, romance, children’s story because it makes the plot interesting and exciting.

How are conflicts resolved in a story? Do you think a conflict must be resolved?

In actuality, conflict is not always bad and does not have to result in violence or hurt feelings. Conflicts are part of everyday life and they cannot be avoided. However , whether a conflict escalates, ends negatively or is resolved and ends peacefully in a literary selection, is entirely based on the choices a character/s make. The choices made by a character in a story reveals his/her feelings, values and attitudes.

Dan and Jess were best of friends. They always help each other both in school and personal problems. Dan’s parents were rich while Jess’s are very poor that they had financial difficulties in sending all their children to school. But this, doesn’t stop Jess in pursuing his studies and doing his best. However, one day, Dan’s parents told him to stop befriending Jess since he is just after his money and whatever help he can give. What do you think will Dan do? What is the conflict in this scenario? How will Dan resolve this problem?

Mina and Letty both grabbed a chair towards a computer in the library for their research works. Both claimed that they needed such time on the internet for their research study. a . What type of conflict is presented in the text? b . How would you resolve this kind of conflict if you were there in the library?
