TYPES OF LISTENING
When we say listening it is receiving language through the ears. Listening involves identifying the sounds of speech and processing them into words and sentences. When we listen, we use our ears to receive individual sounds (letters, stress, rhythm and pauses) and we use our brain to convert these into messages that mean something to us.
Focused listening where the listener fully concentrates, understands, and responds to the speaker. ACTIVE LISTENING
Example: So, you want us to build the new school in the style of the old one?
Listening with the intent to understand and empathize with the speaker’s feelings and emotions. EMPATHETIC LISTENING
Example: I’ve been there, and I’m so sorry that you’re dealing with this situation right now.
Listening to evaluate and analyze information, questioning and interpreting what is being said. CRITICAL LISTENING
Example: I’m confused with Alice Gou’s statement during the senate hearing. There is no consistency on her statements
