ACTIVE And PASSIVE

ACTIVE VOICE A verb is ACTIVE if its subject performs the action.

PASSIVE VOICE A sentence is PASSIVE if its subject is being "acted upon” by the verb. The subject is the recipient of the action.

Ways of changing ACTIVE to PASSIVE The direct object becomes the subject. The verb has always a part of BE that serves as an auxiliary verb. The given, main or principal verb is always in the past participle. The actor/performer becomes the object of the preposition BY.

Example ACTIVE: Carl bakes the cake S . V. D.O PASSIVE The cake was baked by Carl. S . Be-PP. by Obj.

Example ACTIVE: My uncle built a sailboat. S. V. D.O PASSIVE A sailboat was built by my uncle. S. Be-PP. by Obj .

We use the passive when : 1. we want to emphasize the receiver of the action. Example: President Kennedy was killed by Lee Harvey Oswald . 2. we don’t know who did the action (the agent): Example: My wallet has been stolen . 3. we think the agent is not important or interesting: Example: Our house is being painted . 4 . we are making general statements or announcements: Example: Passengers are reminded to fasten their seatbelts . 5. the agent is everyone: Example: The emergency services can be called by dialing 999 . 6. we are writing formal or scientific texts: Example: Potassium was added and mixed in. The solution was heated to 80°C and then allowed to cool.

Ways of changing PASSIVE to ACTIVE The object of the preposition BY becomes the subject. The subject becomes the direct object. *Consider the tenses of the auxiliary verb and the number of the subject.*

Example PASSIVE: The policeman is called by Luis. S. Be-PP . Obj. ACTIVE: Luis calls the policeman. S. V. Obj.
