What is Propaganda? Propaganda refers to a type of message aimed at influencing opinions and/or the behavior of people. What is the goal of propaganda? The goal of propaganda is to publicly promote something: information put out by an organization or government to promote a policy, idea, or cause. It has a misleading publicity: deceptive or distorted information that is systematically spread.
Advertisers, influencers, and politicians have been using propaganda techniques for generations now. These techniques are used to manipulate and influence the way we perceive a person, event, or product.
The Propaganda Techniques
Example Drug manufacturers do this frequently in ads in which they skim over the possible harmful side effects of their products. Facts are selected and presented which most effectively strengthen and authenticate the point of view of the propagandist.
Name Calling – stereotyping the competition/opposing idea with a bad label As seen in the photo, Burger King throws a punch line at its biggest archenemy McDonald ’ s Big Mac.
Bandwagon – the basic theme of the band wagon appeal is that " everyone else is doing it, and so should you ." Example Almost every Filipino is patronizing K-drama series nowadays. Will you be left behind this craze? In the given example, the phrase almost every Filipino signifies the huge following of K-drama in the Philippines. The audience/reader in effect would be persuaded to watch K-dramas since a lot of people is watching them.
Example: Judy Ann Santos, an actress and also known to be a chef, advertises “Angel condensada .” Judy Ann Santos is a prominent actress and an effective model for the product. People who idolize the actress will surely patronize the product being advertised.
