Concept Of English Language A language is a system of communication which consists of a set of sounds and written symbols which are used by the people of a particular country or region for talking or writing.
“ Language is a set of arbitrary vocal symbols by means of which a social group communication .” ( Block & Tragers ) “ Language is a set of human habits , the purpose of which is to give expression to human Thoughts and feelings especially to impart them to others.” (Otto Jespersen)
Nature of English Language RECEPTIVE Receptive is regarded as an extraordinary nature of English language . It has maintained its open door policy. It has adopted and accepted thousands of worlds from European ,Asian , African , Indian , Japanese Chains and other language .we can see a great impact an classical language like Latin , Greek , Arabic , French and Sanskrit on English. English has the richest vocabulary due to its receptiveness. UNIQE English is unique is its nature. English is not 100% French not German or Arabic , not Latin or Greek .English is English ,English differs from other language in its sound, words , structure and functioning.
DYNAMIC English is a dynamic language .it is constantly changing These Changes are regular And systemic. If you study the history of English language ,you will to know the difference between old English ,medieval English and modern English. The old English words , like “thou and three” are now “you and yours”. In the age of technology ,we have Developed “SMS English” where many short forms are used such as :”you is written as “U” ,”as soon as possible” is written as “ASAP”, and Your is written as “ ur ” CREATIVE English is a highly creative language , that’s why it has richest literature in the world. A writer or speaker can write or speak something he has never written or said befor . English literature has wide variety of prose and poetry, fiction and non-fictional writing Such as : novel, short stories, travelogues , drama ,song, etc. because of the creative power of English.
PRODUCTIVE English is also highly productive . One can make thousands and lakhs of sentence with Its words. There is no need to learn by rote English sentence. SYMBOLIC English is symbolic. Every English word, phrase or sentence represents some object,activity Or idea, EX. The announcement , “ The Ajanta express is arriving on platform no 1,” Creats a mental picture of the train arriving on a particular, so , English language is symbolic In its nature.
IMPORTANCE OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE It’s the language of international business With world business headquarters predominantly in the financial hubs of the UK and USA, English has long been the default language of trade . Therefore, English is the dominant business language and it has become almost a necessity for people to speak English if they are to enter a global workforce, research from all over the world shows that cross-border business communication is most often conducted in English.
Most movies are in English Hollywood is a powerhouse of global entertainment, so it’s natural that English would become the main language for movie-making. Sure, the movies are often dubbed over or subtitled – but they’re really best enjoyed in the language in which they were intended.
It helps you understand other languages English has a long and fascinating history that spans wars, invasions and influences from around the globe. Cultures that have helped shape modern English include Romans, Vikings and the French. For this reason it’s a hybrid language comprised of Latin, Germanic and Romance elements.
You can say things in a hundred different ways One of English’s best assets is its flexibility: you can often find many different ways to to explain the same thing thanks to its wide range of vocabulary. It’s said to have well over 750,000 words (depending a bit on how you count – some generous estimates put that number at 1 million)
It can be used around the world English is also hugely important as an international language and plays an important part even in countries where the UK has historically had little influence. It is learnt as the principal foreign language in most schools in Western Europe. It is also an essential part of the curriculum in far-flung places like Japan and South Korea, and is increasingly seen as desirable by millions of speakers in China. Therefore, if you have the basics of English language you can make yourself understood in nearly every corner of the world.
It’s the language of the internet Most of the content produced on the internet (50%) is in English. So knowing English will allow you access to an incredible amount of information which may not be otherwise available.
INSTRUMENTAL FUNCTION That is used to express a need ,such as often food drink comfort. Ex- I want car , I need dress etc … REGULATARY FUNCTION Use language to direct other people including commanding or requesting Ex – Don’t make noise Get out from here INTRACTION FUNCTION It is used to develop relationship and make contact with others. Ex- Hi I am Rocky . Would you like to be my friend Thank you
PERSONAL FUNCTION Language that express personal opinions , attitudes and felling Ex- I am so happy I am intelligent IMAGINATION FUNCATION The use of language to tell story and crate imaginary world. Ex- Once upon a time there was a king INFORMATIVE FUNCATION The use of language to convey, fact and information. Ex- Did you know that pandas only eat bamboo
