English For Specific purposes (ESP)

Course Description This course introduces students to the principles, approaches, and practices of English for Specific Purposes (ESP), with emphasis on English for Academic Purposes (EAP) and English for Professional Purposes (EPP). Students will explore needs analysis, materials development, lesson design, and assessment strategies for learners with specific communicative goals. Practical application will be highlighted through the creation of customized ESP modules for various disciplines and professions.

INTRODUCTION TO ESP

LEARNING OBJECTIVES demonstrate understanding of the concepts of ESP recognize the need to study and teach English across all disciplines

MOTIVATION Is no code switching a minimum requirement for English teachers/students? Who are the best teachers of English? NESTs (Native English Speaking Teachers) or NNESTs (Non-native English Speaking Teachers)? Is English a measurement of one’s intelligence?

WHAT IS ESP?

ENGLISH FOR SPECIFIC PURPOSES (ESP) “ESP is generally used to refer to the teaching of English for a clearly utilitarian purpose” ( Macky and Mountford , 1978). That is to say that English should be taught to achieve specific language skills using real situations, in a manner that allows them to use English in their future profession, or to comprehend English discourse related to their area of specialty.

ENGLISH FOR SPECIFIC PURPOSES (ESP) In ESP, “language is learnt not for its own sake or for the sake of gaining a general education, but to smooth the path to entry or greater linguistic efficiency in academic, professional or workplace environments” ( Basturkmen , 2006). This denotes that the role of ESP is to help language learners to build up the needed abilities in order to use them in a specific field of inquiry, occupation, or workplace. These definitions were stated according to ESP evolution through time.

ENGLISH FOR SPECIFIC PURPOSES (ESP) The aim of the ESP is to determine the needs of a specific group of learners. ESP is often divided English for Academic Purposes (EAP) and English for Occupational Purposes (EOP). Further sub-divisions of EOP are business English, professional English, and vocational English.

ENGLISH FOR SPECIFIC PURPOSES (ESP) ESP is an approach to language teaching where the content and methods are based on the learner’s reasons for learning. (Hutchinson & Waters)

ABSOLUTE CHARACTERISTICS OF ESP (Dudley-Evans, 2001) ESP is defined to meet specific needs of the learners; ESP makes use of underlying methodology and activities of the discipline it serves; ESP is centered on the language (grammar, lexis, register), skills, discourse and genre appropriate to these activities.

IMPORTANCE OF ESP There has been an increase in vocational training and learning throughout the world. With the spread of globalization has come the increasing use of English as the language of international communication . More and more people are using English in a growing number of occupational contexts. Students are starting to learn and therefore master general English at a younger age, and so move on to ESP at an earlier age.

3 C s for improving teacher’s competence in teaching esp (bell, 2022)

CURIOSITY The teacher should be interested in the subject area and wants to learn more.

COLLABORATION Teachers should seek out subject specialists, show them their work and ask for their feedback.

CONFIDENCE Confidence will grow as teachers explore the new subject matter, engage with subject specialists and learn from their learners.

ESP TEACHING MATERIAL

Harding (2007) stresses that the general skills that a general English teacher uses, e.g., being communicative, using authentic materials and analysing English in a practical way are also applicable to ESP. He also suggests that teachers should:

a. Think about what is needed and don’t just follow an off-the-shelf course or course book. b. Understand the nature of their student’s subject area. c. Work out their language needs in relation to their specialization.

d. Use contexts, texts, situations from their subject area. e. Use authentic materials. f. Make the tasks as authentic as possible. g. Motivate the students with variety, relevance and fun. h. Take the classroom into the real world and bring real world into the classroom.
