ACRONYM DEFINITION
AB  Asian beauty; designates Asian Beauty products, skincare, 
makeup, hair, body, etc. 
acid  Product that exfoliates skin with acidic ingredients AHA and/or 
BHA, also known as chemical exfoliant by contrast to physical 
exfoliants (like scrubs) 
AHAs
  Alpha hydroxy acids, derived from natural sources including milk 
(lactic acid), sugar (glycolic acid), citrus fruit (citric acids) and 
apples (malic acids). Commonly used in chemical peels or 
creams for treating wrinkles and sun damaged skin.
AIO  All‐in‐one 
APD  Antiperspirant deodorant

  1. Beauty Advisor: a title for a sales representative at the 
cosmetics department of various stores 
2. Beauty Ambassador: a volunteer product tester and promoter

BB cream
  “Blemish Balm”, “Blemish Base” or “Beauty Balm” (in Western 
markets): a product serving as a combination foundation, 
moisturizer, tinted sunblock (in most cases) and concealer. In 
the West, frequently used as an alternative marketing name for 
tinted moisturizer/sunblock.  
BB
  Beautyblender; a nifty sponge tool used for blending 
liquid/cream‐based products or beauty balm (also known as 
blemish balm). 
BBB  Bleached blonde bombshell 
BC  Beauty consultant 
BHA  Beta hydroxy acid: another name for the skin care ingredient 
salicylic acid, which offers pore refining properties and acts as an 
exfoliator. 
BHT  Butylated hydroxytoluene: antioxidant and additive used as a 
preservative. 
 
BI  Beauty Insider: Sephora's customer loyalty program; or an 
individual on the low tier of the program, below a VIB.

CO  Conditioner only, meaning not using shampoo

D&C  Drug and Cosmetic or D&C dyes: legal artificial colorants added

 skin care products. The letters are typically followed by a 
number, indicating the specific shade of the dye.

DD cream  "Double Duty" / “Dynamic Do‐all” or “Daily Defense” creams 
that provide coverage, anti‐aging, sun protection, etc. 
DE‐POT  To remove a pan of product, such as 
eyeshadow, from its main 
packaging. Often done to aggregate multiple products in a 
single, more compact case. 
DHA  Dihydroxyacetone, a common ingredient in sunless tanners 
DMAE  Dimethylaminoethanol: ingredient with the ability to slow down 
or stop the contractions in the skin that cause it to furrow and 
wrinkle. Can help smooth
 the skin. 
DR  Derma rolling (also referred to as micro needling): method using 
a derma roller with micro needles to improve skin texture

DUPE  Duplicate: a product that knocks off another, usually more 
expensive one, most frequently in applied color rather than in 
packaging. 
E.L.F (also ELF)  Eyes Lips Face: an abbreviation that serves as the primary 
identifier of the company, which makes budget cosmetics. Sold 
online as well as at Target,

  Metallic: for eyeshadows, the verb 'foil' refers to the process of 
mixing the shadow with water or another liquid for a more 
metallic/pigmented effect.

FT  Flat top; used to describe brushes with a flat top head

LHK  Long‐handled kabuki; used to describe a kabuki brush with a 
long handle

makeup stash  The makeup treasures that one owns 
MAP  Magnesium ascorbyl phosphate: a nutrient derived from vitamin 
C that is often added to skin care products for its anti‐aging 
abilities. Generally more stable than pure vitamin C. 
MLBB  My 
lips, but better. Lip color that is similar to that of, but still 
stronger than, one's natural lips.  
MMU  Mineral makeup 
MO  Mineral oil 
monolid  Eye, or an individual with eyes, lacking a (fully‐formed) eyelid 
crease/fold. Most commonly seen in individuals of east 
Asian/oriental descent. 
MU (or M/U)  Makeup 
MUA
  1. Make‐up artist: (n.) One who applies make‐up to other 
people's faces, either for free or for an insignificant amount of 
money. 
2. Makeupalley. A site of aggregated short user‐submitted 
reviews on products. 
3. Makeup Academy. A brand of low‐cost cosmetics, sold at 
Superdrug and online. 
Known for their Undressed Palette, which 
is a dupe of Urban Decay's popular original Naked palette.

PA  Protection Factor of UVA: a measurement of a product's

PEG  Polyethylene glycol: 
used in cosmetics as emollients (to soften 
the skin) and emulsifiers (which facilitate the mixing of oil‐ and 
water‐based ingredients), and to improve penetration of other 
ingredients contained in the product.

PIH  Post‐inflammatory hyperpigmentation

Parabens  Types of chemicals used as preservatives

burn. SPF refers only to protection from UVB but not UVA rays.

known as 
the epidermis and cause the skin to burn.
