Scrabble ELA 7
Why Scrabble? We play scrabble to work on our vocabulary! This means ELA Scrabble has some extra rules that focus on New words Spelling Bonus points…
Standard Rules Set-up We play in groups of 3-4 Each player starts with 7 tiles in their ‘rack’ The player with the most recent birthday starts The first word must start in the center of the board , going either vertically or horizontally (no diagonal words!) At the end of your turn, replace the tiles you used from the tile bag so you always have 7 Play continues clockwise → the player to the left goes next
Standard Rules next turns Each new word must connect to the existing words in one of the following ways: Adding one or more letters to a word or letters already on the board. Placing a word at right angles to a word already on the board. The new word must use one of the letters already on the board or must add a letter to one of the words on the board. Placing a complete word parallel to a word already played so that adjacent letters also form complete words. Essentially, as long as the tiles you play connect in some way with existing tiles and do not make any ‘gibberish’ words you are good to go All words played must be from the scrabble dictionary, or the ELA dictionary…
Standard Rules Scoring The score for each turn is the s um of the letter values in each word(s) formed or modified on that turn, plus the additional points obtained from placing letters on Premium Squares. Point modifiers: double and triple letter spaces multiply the value of the tile only on the turn they are placed Double and triple word spaces multiply the value of the word after letter bonuses are calculated only on the turn the tile is placed upon If you play all 7 tiles in your rack this is called ‘bingo’ and adds 50 to your final score that turn after any double or triple word score. At the end of the game when a player plays their last tile, any remaining tiles in your rack are subtracted from your total.
