PA RI CH AY STORY : A quiet, sweet tempered housewife endures small slights from her well-educated husband and daughter every day because of her inability to speak and understand English. A beautiful and inspirational story of a woman who, with her curiosity and dedication proves herself and earns respect that she deserves.

The movie revolves around a housewife as we know named Shashi (perfectly played by Late Sridevi ) who often feels humiliated and disrespected just because of her inability to speak and understand English language. Wom en Empower ment And the worst thing is that her own daughter (Sapna) makes fun of her and that too in front of her husband who doesn’t even care how she feels.

Now, Shashi is so done with all these stereotypes and decides to learn English to prove herself to the society. So, here she has been to New York for her niece’s wedding where she decides to join English speaking class without her family knowing all this. Now following are the parts where something related to women empowerment has been mentioned: Although, the movie is not specifically based on women empowerment , but however, there are some instances which would make viewer relate to the basic mindset of the society even till date.

#1. When Satish (Shashi’s husband) is unable to attend Sapna’s PTA meeting at her school and instead asks Shashi to attend. Even after having a good talk at the meeting with the Sapna’s teacher, Sapna scolds her mom for not speaking in English and asking the teacher instead to speak in Hindi. And along with all this, she says it would have been better if Dad had come.

#2. When her(Shashi’s) mother-in-law supports and motivates Shashi in her hard times and when she feels stressed and nervous about going New York alone. Here, as a woman Shashi feels so emotionally strong and confident as her mother-in-law supports her always and makes her feel a sense of belongingness in the family as she is the only one in the family who supports and keeps cheering her from the beginning.

#3. Another person in Shashi’s life who understands and helps her is her younger niece who always kept motivating her; even she was the one who convinced her to give the exam (which was scheduled on the day of wedding) and prove herself. Shashi’s younger niece, Radha comes to know about Shashi’s hanging out with her classmate from English class, and she instead helps and keeps her taking English lessons a secret. This shows how a woman understands the feeling of another especially closed ones.

#4. When Shashi travels by flight alone for the first time, she comes across a passenger who also adds on to her life a beautiful lesson. And guess who played that person in the film- Amitabh Bachchan (as a guest appearance) The scene becomes quite funny and entertaining as the passenger makes her feel comfortable and helps her through the basic facilities in the seat. Also, he is later seen dubbing English movie in Hindi for Shashi to understand which appears to be quite funny and loved by the audience.

#5. There also come some low points in Shashi’s life during the 5 weeks in New York which while talking to the French guy (Shashi’s classmate) makes her express her frustrating thoughts in her own language, kind of her pure feeling that time. This scene is from the starting phase of Shashi’s English tuition, when while walking with Laurent (her French classmate), Shashi says that when a man cooks food it is often considered as an art whereas on the other hand if a woman does the same, it is considered her duty.

And the second scene is, when Shashi gets a call from her daughter (Sapna) where she scolds her out of panic as she couldn’t find her scrapbook and humiliates her again on her illiteracy in English as always. So, Shashi while walking with Laurent, again expresses her frustration with him.

#6. Shashi's Presentation: Towards the end of the film, Shashi surprises everyone by delivering a flawless presentation in English. This moment marks a significant milestone in her journey of self-empowerment, as she confidently communicates her thoughts and experiences, silencing her critics and proving her worth. This scene is a pivotal moment in the film, highlighting Shashi's transformation from a timid and underestimated woman to a strong and empowered individual. It showcases her ability to overcome her insecurities, embrace her true potential, and challenge the societal norms that once held her back.

Throughout her presentation, Shashi's confidence grows, and her fluency in English shines through. She eloquently expresses her thoughts and emotions, proving to herself and others that her worth goes far beyond mere linguistic abilities. The room fills with applause and admiration as Shashi concludes her presentation, leaving a lasting impact on everyone present.

" English Vinglish " portrays women empowerment through the journey of Shashi, a middle-aged housewife who defies societal expectations, finds her voice, and gains confidence by learning English. The film celebrates the strength and resilience of women, encouraging them to break free from limitations and embrace their true potential. It was all about Shashi’s journey from here- To here- CON C LUS ION
