Engr 113 Introduction Winter 2021
Overview Today will be an overview of -the purpose of the course -a review of some of the material you are already familiar with -the format we will use -more review of the material you know – with a bit of a twist
Short Summary of Engr 113 This course will seem familiar to you. A lot of the course is a repeat of Phys 111 -however, it is Phys 111 on steroids In Phys 111 most problems were 2D. In Engr 113 about half of the problems are in 3D. In Phys 111 the emphasis was the right answer. In Engr 113 the emphasis will be on getting to the answer. Process matters! A section on Thermodynamics has been added
How to Do Well Put your effort where it counts – on following the process We will follow a simplified version of the ISO 9000 standards for writing a solution. Make your starting point clear Make your diagrams clear Explain each block of the solution Summarize at key points Unambiguously state the solution (Never fall behind in the class)
Your Resources Textbook: Hibbeler : Statics and Dynamics 14 th ed My lectures My study guide Each other
The Course Format (planned) Cover 1 chapter a week About 10-20 minutes of “theory” More than an hour of examples An hour and a half of in-class problem solving Emphasis will be on the process of solving a problem and documenting it Much of the learning will be student-to-student discussion Weekly homework Exams
Topics Determined by new “Core Curriculum” for the province Hibbeler : Chapters 1-8, 12-13 Thermodynamics: Zeroth law, Heat Capacity, Kinetic Theory, First Law of Thermodynamics, Heat Engines
Summary You are about to get a (modified) course that has been very popular and successful You will need to stay on top of the material – each chapter tends to build on previous ones The material will (usually) be familiar The biggest hurdle for most people is getting into the mindset that your duty is to your client/employer and must make your work accessible to them
