CONSTRUCTION PROJECT
MANAGEMENT

INTRODUCTION TO SAFTY IN CONSTRUCTION
Safety in construction is a critical aspect of any
building or infrastructure project. It involves the
implementation of procedures, equipment, and
training to prevent accidents, injuries, and
fatalities at the worksite. Due to the inherently
hazardous nature of construction activities, safety
is regulated by laws and guidelines to ensure the
protection of workers, visitors, and the general
public.

CAUSES OF CONSTRUCTION
SITE ACCIDENT
Construction site accidents refer to any unintended
events that cause injury, harm, or damage at a
construction site.
❖FALLS FROM HEIGHTS
❖FALLING OBJECTS
❖SLIP TEIP AND FALL
❖ELECTRICAL HAZARDS
❖MACHINERY ACCIDENT
❖POOR COMMUNICATION

PREVENTING CONSTRUCTION SITE ACCIDENT
Preventing construction accidents requires a proactive approach that includes
implementing safety measures, training, and monitoring work conditions
Comprehensive Safety Training
Use of Personal Protective Equipment
Site Hazard Assessment
Clear Communication
Machinery and Equipment Safety
Proper Material Handling

POLICIES OSHA ISO 45001
➢OSHA POLICIES
OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) and ISO 45001 are two key
frameworks for occupational health and safety (OHS) management, but they differ in
scope, application, and structure.
OSHA is a U.S. government agency that sets and enforces safety and health regulations for
workplaces in the United States. Its policies aim to reduce workplace hazards and ensure a
safe and healthy working environment.
❖Hazard Communication Standard
❖Personal Protective Equipment
❖Lockout/Tagout
❖Safety Programs

ISO 45001 POLICIES
ISO 45001 is an international standard for Occupational Health and
Safety Management Systems (OHSMS). It provides a framework to
help organizations improve employee safety, reduce workplace risks,
and create better, safer working conditions globally.
❖Risk Management Approach
❖Leadership and Worker Participation
❖Legal Compliance
❖Incident Investigation

PREVENTIVE MEASURE OVERVIEW
Preventive measures in occupational health and
safety (OHS) are actions taken to prevent accidents,
injuries, illnesses, and other incidents in the
workplace. These measures focus on identifying
potential hazards and risks before they can cause
harm and implementing controls to eliminate or
mitigate them
➢Risk Assessment
➢ Engineering Controls
➢Administrative Controls
➢Personal Protective Equipment

ROLE OF SAFETY CULTURE
➢Promoting Safety Awareness: Safety culture ensures that safety is a priority at every level, from top
management to employees.
➢Enhancing Compliance: A strong safety culture ensures compliance with regulations and safety standards.
It encourages individuals to adhere to safety policies and procedures, minimizing the risk of accidents or
injuries.
➢ Improving Employee Morale and Trust: When employees feel that their safety is valued, they are more
likely to have higher morale, trust management, and perform better in their roles.
➢ Reducing Accidents and Incidents: A strong safety culture leads to fewer workplace accidents and near-
misses by fostering an environment where safety is everyone's responsibility.
➢Long-Term Cost Savings: By preventing accidents, a positive safety culture can reduce costs associated
with injuries, lawsuits, insurance premiums, and downtime.
.

SAFETY IN CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY
❖Every employee should be trained to safety by contractor.
❖No employee should be given new assignment without proper
explanation of hazards with his fellow employees.
❖Adequate fire fighting equipments should be provided at crucial
locations
❖Employees under influence of intoxicating beverage should not be
permitted.
❖Sufficient first aid shall be arranged to the injured under medical officer.
❖Employees working around moving machinery should not be permitted
to wear loose garments.

Site engineers /Supervisors role in safety
❖He must ensure safe working environment
❖He must regularly inspect and take up maintainance of all
machinery, tools and equipment used in the works
❖He must provide efficient first aid to injured persons
❖Site engineer should maintain suitable rescue equipment
❖He must clean all construction areas and storage yards
❖He must give training to workers and employees about
precuations with respect to fire prevention, protection and fire

➢CASE STUDY OF CONSTRUCTION SITE ACCIDENT
Case Study: The Collapse of a Scaffolding System
❖In 2019, a construction company was building a multi-story commercial complex in an urban area.
The project involved complex scaffolding systems to support workers and materials during
construction
❖Incident DescriptionOn a busy workday, a sudden windstorm struck the site. The scaffolding, which
was not adequately secured to withstand high winds, began to sway. Despite the workers’ attempts
to stabilize the structure, it ultimately collapsed, causing several workers to fall from various heights.
❖Immediate ConsequencesInjuries: Ten workers were injured, with two suffering severe
trauma.Fatalities: Tragically, one worker did not survive the fall.Property Damage: The scaffolding
equipment and several nearby materials were destroyed.
