Enhancing a Microsoft Word Document

Tools Microsoft Word provides several tools which enable users to enhance the appearance of their documents. Some of these features have been listed bel ow.

Highlight text > Insert > WordArt (in the "Text" group) > Select the desired style from the drop-down box > Select font size and type in the "Edit WordArt Text" box which appears > OK. If your cursor is trapped within the WordArt border, click on any blank part of the document to hide the canvas border and press: Shift > Click on the "Enter" button. 1. WordArt

2. Clip Art & Other Images Insert > Clip Art (in the Illustrations group) > Enter a suitable description for the clip art in the "Clip Art" sidebar which appears > Click on the "Go" button > Click on a desired image from the list that appears . For Pictures and other stored images, go to : Insert > Picture and locate the picture on your PC via the dialogue box which appears > Insert.

3. Resizing & Repositioning Images The image inserted may be too large or positioned incorrectly. In order to address these issues, do the following.

3.1 Resizing Click on the image, a rectangular or square border will appear around it. The border shall contain "handles" - one in each corner and one in the middle of each side. Use the corner borders to resize the image and to retain its length to width proportions. To alter only the height, use the top or bottom handles. Width can be altered by using the left and right handles. You can also go to the "Size" group on the ribbon and enter the desired width and height. Similarly, the image can be right clicked followed by selecting “ Size … ” from the context menu. Please note that the top central handle can be used to rotate the image.

3.2 Repositioning This can also be done in a number of ways. If the image is to be aligned "left", "right" or " centre ," highlight and use the appropriate alignment button on the ribbon.   The image may also be clicked and the "Text Wrapping" option selected in the "Arrange" group . In the dropdown menu select one of the options. The "Square" option often works for most situations. After that is done, the image may be dragged to any location on the page.   Additionally, the image may be right-clicked and the "Text Wrapping" option be selected as above.

4. Formatting Images Click on the image. The Ribbon will change to present a number of options for image enhancement. Special borders or frames for reshaping may be applied by selecting the image and clicking on one of the image buttons under the "Picture Styles" group. Brightness , contrast, sharpness etc may be adjusted in the "Adjust" group.

5. Inserting Backgrounds Go to Page Layout > Page Color (in the "Page Background" group) and select a desired colour from the palette. To add effects to the colour click on Page Color > Fill Effects. Note that this page colour is only for onscreen purposes and will not appear on printed pages. In order to have a printable background, a Text Box may be used.

6. Page and Paragraph Borders Page Layout > Page Borders (in the Page Background group), To apply a border for the entire document, ensure that "Whole document" is selected under the "Apply to" menu. Make sure that the "Page Border" tab is selected in the "Borders and Shading" dialogue box. For line borders select a border setting under "Setting." In order to select a line style, click on a desired style under "Style." A preview shall appear under "Preview." Click on any of the 4 sides of the graphic under "Preview" add or remove a border line. In order to use images as borders, click on the arrow under "Art" and select a desired image set. Paragraph borders may be set by first selecting then clicking on the "Borders" tab in the "Borders and Shading" dialog box (see above)

7. Watermarks Page Layout > Watermark > Select one of the presets or to add a custom word, click on "Custom Watermark."

8. Inserting Text Boxes & Special Shapes Insert > Text Box (in the "Text" group). Select the "Simple text box" option. This will place a text box containing some preset text in the document. Text boxes may be formatted in the same manner as images . Shapes such as ovals and lines may be added by going to: Insert > Shapes

9. Inserting Text Boxes (As Backgrounds) Insert > Text Box (in the "Text" group). Select the "Simple text box" option. This will place a text box containing some preset text in the document. Delete the text and resize the text box (using border handles) to fill the entire page. All content on the page shall be placed behind the text box and thus become invisible. Images may be revealed by selecting clicking on the text box then selecting "Send to Back > Send to Back (in the "Arrange").   Text may be revealed via: Send to back > Send Behind > Text.   A background colour may be added to the text box by clicking on one of the coloured buttons in the "Text Box Styles" group. Alternatively a colour , picture, gradient, texture or pattern may be used as the text box background by clicking on the "Shape Fill" menu.
