THE IMPACT OF THE ATOMIC BOMBING ON HIROSHIMA AND NAGASAKI'S NATURAL RESOURCES

Slide Content

The I mpact of the Atomic Bombing on Hiroshima and Nagasaki's Natural Resources The atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki had devastating consequences not only on the people, but also on the natural environment of these cities. BY:- SYED ABUBAKAR J.

Before and After Pre-Bombing Hiroshima Hiroshima was once a thriving city with a beautiful landscape of mountains and rivers. Post-Bombing Hiroshima The bombing destroyed the city and left long-lasting effects on the environment. The rivers were contaminated and the soil was unable to sustain plant life. Pre-Bombing Nagasaki Nagasaki was an important industrial city, known for its shipbuilding and mining. It was home to a bustling port and a thriving fishing industry. Post-Bombing Nagasaki The bombing destroyed the city's infrastructure and left behind a toxic environment that impacted the natural resources in the surrounding areas.

The Human Impact on Nature Soil Quality The atomic bombing destroyed the topsoil which contained the essential nutrients needed to support plant growth. Decades later, the soil still lacked fertility, making it difficult for vegetation to regrow. Water Quality The rivers running through Hiroshima and Nagasaki became contaminated, which has impacted fishing, aquatic life and the quality of drinking water for survivors and their descendants. Biodiversity The atomic bombing had long-term effects on the natural habitats of animals. The area around Hiroshima became barren, devoid of all plant and animal life. It was only after years that life started to re-emerge.

HYPOTHESIS The atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki raised awareness about the significance of environmental issues in armed conflicts, leading to the development of legal frameworks to address and prevent environmental damage caused by warfare.

RESEARCH QUESTIONS 1 2 How did the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki influence the development of environmental law in the context of armed conflicts and wartime activities? What are the key legal challenges and considerations in addressing the environmental damage caused by the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki within the framework of international environmental law?

The Road to Recovery 1 The Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park Built in 1955, the park serves as a reminder of the atomic bombing and works towards promoting peace and understanding. It also has a special area dedicated to the study of the effects of radiation on the environment. 2 Environmental Monitoring Current measures include monitoring radiation levels in the air, soil and water in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The data collected is used to evaluate the progress made towards rehabilitation and to identify areas that still require attention. 3 Reforestation Efforts Reforestation efforts are ongoing in the regions between Hiroshima and Nagasaki that were affected by the atomic bombing. Various species of trees and vegetation have been planted to replenish the depleted soil and promote biodiversity.

Lessons Learned The atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki had severe, long-lasting effects on the environment. It highlighted the need to understand the potential ecological consequences of armed conflict and the importance of embracing peace for the preservation of the natural world.

Conclusion The atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki was a transformative event that reshaped the environment and disrupted the natural equilibrium of the surrounding regions. However, lessons learned from these tragic events have made us more aware of our individual responsibilities to work towards peace and the protection of our planet for future generations.

The Future Facing the Past Peace Monuments Monuments such as the "Atomic Bomb Dome" serve as a reminder of the consequences of using nuclear weapons and advocate for peace in the world. Clean Energy Japan has embraced clean energy, particularly solar, as a way to move towards a more sustainable future and redress the past mistakes, legacy of the nuclear age. Renewal of Ecosystems The Hiroshima and Nagasaki areas are undergoing renewal programs with the planting of various species of trees and vegetation, which has led to the return of animals and birds to the area.
