EPSY 2075 – Video Critique By Kirsten Anderson
What are Gardner’s 8 Intelligences? Naturalist Intrapersonal Interpersonal Bodily-Kinesthetic Logical-Mathematical Spatial Musical Linguistic
What is Intelligence? Defined – Capacity to Learn, Total Knowledge, Adaptability Gardner’s Theory of Multiple Intelligences Agrees there is a general intelligence, but people can have strengths and weaknesses in certain intelligences Sternberg’s Triarchic Theory of Intelligence Analytical, Creative, and Practical Stresses ability to achieve own goals and focus on your strengths to compensate for weaknesses
A New Theory of Human Intelligence By Scott Barry Kaufman
Kaufman’s Theory… Incorporates Twice Exceptional - Students simultaneously have great strengths and major challenges May have special talent, great creativity, and great curiosity However, often have social difficulties and uneven academic performance Broaden ideas of Strengths – Four C’s Capacity, Competence, Commitment, Creativity Builds on Gardner – multiple intelligences, but motivation is key factor Intelligence is engagement and ability in pursuit of personal goals
Strengths Accounts for motivation – Important for achieving goal, performing skill, academic achievement Acknowledges limits of IQ – Only measures academic aspect of intelligence, bias to culture and minorities Perspective – Kauffman was in a special education program until given opportunity to show intelligence Weaknesses Label trapping – Self fulfilling prophecy, if we have students believe they must have incredible talent or lacking social skills Not a “new theory” – Rather a greater context of intelligence
To Add On To Kaufman’s Ideas… Understand IQ as guideline to predict ability, be aware of biases and lacking full intelligence of the test Move away from “Twice Exceptional” labelling – avoid self fulfilling prophecy, allow students opportunity to expand motivation and gain greater fields of intelligence.
Discussion Do IQ test provide more value than harm? Do you agree with Kaufman? Is motivation the greatest factor in intelligence?
